edge smoothing in phtoshop cs3

Hi all
On with an image of a crowd at the moment and i'm erasing the background with eraser tool round legs ,heads etc
It looks ok but a little rough when i zoom back out
Is there a method of smoothing the image afterwards?

If you actually mask off the background using layer masks, rather than by erasing, you get the benefit of being able to undo any mistakes you may make, as well as being able to blur the mask slightly upon completion to soften the edges a little bit if required. Masking seems complicated at first, but the flexibility soon becomes appealing.

Agree with using a mask. Creating the mask isn't much harder than clicking away with the eraser tool. Instead of clicking to erase you click to paint white/black onto the mask.
