Yes
I bought a Godox flash from eBay and it arrived with the modelling lamp smashed and a bit loose in the main flash bulb. I’ve sent a message to the seller but is there any advice on how to claim compensation? I’m guessing it’s the sellers responsibility to claim back any money from Royal Mail….

Exactly that. You need to raise it with the seller and get a refund and return the broken item.

If you want to return it, open a return request and select the reason (arrived damaged) take a photo and attach it to the request.
The seller then has a few days to respond, and if that is not to your satisfaction, you can ask ebay to step in.

If the seller accepts the return, or ebay decides in your favour you can return it, there will be a postage label supplied on ebay.

Don't wait to open the return request as you will just end up waiting longer.
The seller still has the option to offer to pay for the breakage, which you can accept (once you have the payment) and close the return request.

It doesn't pay to be charitable, as you will just get taken for a ride.

If you think the packing was inadequate, state that in the return request.

To be honest, the packaging was a bit rubbish - everything was wrapped in paper, but no actual cushioning. The flash had a metal covering over the bulb but I still smashed so RM must have given it some rough handling…

You need to state that on your return request, and a photo of the packing if you still have it.

If you don't include photos, there's a good chance they will be asked for and delay the process for another few days.

I would give the seller a chance to do the right thing by simply messaging them. Show the damage etc. They may respond by simply refunding you. If you go through Ebay, there may be delays whilst the seller's response is awaited. Either way, if it arrived damaged, it is not your responsibility to pay for any post, the seller must provide return post and often, Ebay will provide a return postage label (at the seller's expense).

He did say he had messaged the seller.

If the seller does not reply quickly, they are probably no going to, so any delay in opening a return will just prolong things, and the seller still has the opportunity to resolve it before ebay steps in.

I’ve started a return request and eBay will get involved if there’s no response within 3 days. If it was just the modelling bulb it wouldn’t matter but I think the main bulb is damaged.

Ebay mostly always side with the buyer so you should be ok.

I guess you have taken photos of the damaged item and packaging?

I was in this position the week before last. Poor packing of an item, damaged on arrival.
Sent a picture to the seller - refunded immediately.
Left them + feedback for dealing with it quickly.

Sometimes it workouts out - sometimes not.

Never fails to amaze me how careless people are packaging items for delivery by Royal Mail or Couriers.

Putting Fragile makes no difference and if someone is having a bad day encourages them to throw it around.

I think the worst item I ever had delivered was many years ago when I purchased a collectable antique plate. It arrived in a paper envelope with two pages of newspaper wrapping - needless to say it was in pieces - never seen one of them since either. The seller refunded in full but I hope they learnt a lesson.

For a “write off”, I always message the seller explaining the issue and asking for a refund of all costs including shipping.

If I dont get a reply within 48 hours - I raise an ebay case.

Take photos including the packaging.

Had a few issues in 1000+ transactions on ebay as buyer snd seller. Never lost money ( yet ) nor have I received or needed to give negative feedback - just one definite scammer which eBay removed.

Always nice to buy or sell to genuine photographers though. Reasonable people in the main.

Since the modelling bulb is a user replaceable consumable item I would ask the seller for a partial refund to cover the cost of replacing the modelling lamp.
