I recently won what looked like a nice example of the Vivitar 135mm f/2.8. Halfway through the auction I messaged the seller to ask if the lens had any fungus, haze or separation.. He quickly returned my messaged, confirming that it was fungus free and "like new". Here's the lens in question:

Lens arrived yesterday and as I unwrapped it I was disappointed that it was quite dirty but OK, no biggy, get the cloth out and wipe it down. I noticed the lens hood was very loose and refused to stay in place, even when pointed up at a very slight angle. However, the big shock was still to come.. As I cleaned the front element I noticed something far more sinister within the lens. Not not only was there fungus, there appeared to be an entire bush in there!! :$

Needless to say, the seller received a very short, sharp message to which he responded by refunding me in full and telling me to keep the lens. Fair enough but it does make you wonder..

Now there may be someone on here who has the skills to resurrect this Komine made lens, so if anyone wants it for exactly that purpose, I'll post it to you at the cost of the post (£4.20) and if you'd like to make a small donation to a charity then you'd be welcome to do that. May be some good can come from this after all.

NORTY!

  • No trading anywhere except for the classifieds.

Nice gesture, does look a nice lens on the outside.

bonus to trading in classified is you can give one another feedback though too.

That's what the freebie section is for....

Good grief! In all my years on TP I’ve never noticed that section! [emoji15] My Scottish ancestors must have been turning in their graves!! [emoji38]

If it's just the front lens it should be easy enough to clean. I bought a tool, only cost a few £, and easy to find on line.

I can't promise that I can definitely rescue this lens and I'd only commit to trying to take the front lens out to clean it but if you want to send it to me I'll have a go and send it back, no charge. Be aware though that cleaning can damage coatings.

Or, maybe buy a tool and DIY. You've got nothing really to lose and if the lens is a write off it'll make a nice ornament or paper weight.

ah, sorry. Just read above that you've found a happy home for it.

For anyone buying old lenses I would recommend buying a cheap tool to get the fronts off.

Thanks for the offer, WW, much appreciated. I'm guessing Phil knows how to sort it, tho.

I'm all for keeping kit going if at all possible so I hope this lens can have a new lease of life and maybe go on for another 30 years or more :D
