eBay chancer - what to do?

So ebay have just told me that if I send via RMSD I am not covered by them and the seller could scam me.

They told me to use their label only basically, so now I have to try and persuade him to send me a label.

Ask eBay to arrange the label, I had a similar issue with a return a couple of months ago, after I caused a fuss with eBay CS I'm not sure if they leant on him or simply processed it on his behalf, but the next day I had one in my email.

So I just asked him to send me the official postage label through eBay and he has purchased RMSD and sent that through. Not sure what to do about that!

He's wasted more money then. What a clown.

eBay should sort everything. Give them a call, they were very helpful with me and a phone conversation saves a lot of time.

Keep at it Tom, eBay are very much on the side of the buyer. As others have said do exactly what eBay require.

Ridiculous these days on eBay,
I never bother now if I can help it,
Not everybody is a wide boy selling on there, but my experiences on eBay then they all have been,
Bought a tamron 70-300 although the pics looked ok, there was a big scrape up the front element which wasn’t visible in the listing,
I messaged the seller and he didn’t want to know,
I left it at that and just opened a case with eBay,
Was all resolved and money back in under 10 days,
I just sent it back to him with rmsd, Wasn’t aware that eBay send out postage labels so that’s one for me to remember, I got so fed up I just boxed it up and sent rmsd,
Once he signs for it then that’s all that’s required for eBay to see that he got it back,
Hassle but that was my experience, had another run in with a tamron 10-24 when the AF motor didn’t work,
Had to resort to the same for that too,
Been stung twice it won’t happen again,
Never again will I buy anything on eBay,
As above, eBay do tend to side with the buyer on these type of occasions,
Good luck though, hope it turns out in your favour.

Sounds like you got a support agent who's clueless.

The way it works, when eBay generates the label they also automatically enter the tracking details against the case, if you send it back yourself you just enter your own tracking number into the case and the process should work out the same assuming you've got the shipping address correct.

If they're telling you to wait for the buyer to provide a label then all you need do is ask the seller to provide it, warn them if they don't that eBay will rule in your favour then they won't have the money or the item. Just make sure eBay is clear that the seller has to give you a return label and follow their instructions so it'll be easy for them to close the case in your favour.

After a set amount of time you should be able to escalate the case with eBay.

eBay doesn't do this automatically, it requires the seller as part of the returns process to agree to buy a return label from eBay and they pass it onto the buyer, that's how the seller was able to opt out of it.

As long as it's been sent through the eBay return process it should be fine, if they try to do anything funny it shouldn't matter to the customer service team.

You just need to make sure it's being done through the returns process, so if he sent you the label directly to your email don't use it. Make sure it's sent in the returns section on eBay so you're only using what he's given and the customer support guys can see this. That way if he tries to pull anything it should be an easy decision to rule in your favour.

He’s sent the label through a message but on eBay so they can see it. Think that should be enough for them as proof etc.

If it's a tracked label via eBay message/email all you do is enter the tracking number in on the resolution centre page once you've posted it. Keep the Certificate of Posting with the tracking details on safe, until he does refund.

If eBay say the seller has the choice then how can they say your not covered if you send using his label. It’s a tracked, secure method. You just enter the tracking number, job done.

eBay will only semd you a tracked shipping label which will only cover £100 is the parcel is lost or damaged, so I’m not surprised the seller doesn’t want to use their label.

It depends on how it's done, send a label with a different address than the one on your account via email to the buyer and you could make a convincing argument the buyer didn't send the parcel back to the seller as eBay won't have any records of that.

The point I was trying to stress is you need to do it via eBay so the customer service team can see the chain of events. You want to make it as easy as possible for them to rule in your favour.

i use my credit card for all transaction to buy goods even our caravan , car , camera lens etc
as they will fight your case for you if there is a dispute

Hmm, I’ve never used my credit card for anything like that,
So do they cover you like PayPal do or better if there’s any discrepancies ?
I’ve heard a few people say use a credit card

never had a claim on e-bay yet
but had great result with damp caravan issues against the main dealer

The transaction has to be for more than £100 for section 75 protection to apply.

Same here.

Credit card is better than PayPal, mainly because of Section 75.

You can use PayPal credit which I think gives sec 75(?) and four months interest free!

Hopefully it'll go ok Tom but insist that eBay send you the postage label.

My return of the lights was a nightmare. The seller refused to accept the delivery and it sat in the sorting office waiting for him to pick it up.

Using a bit of nous and detective work (Facebook and other social media platforms) I found out where he worked, advised the post office to expect a phone call from me once I ascertained he was physically at his place of work and to immediately deliver the parcel. I kept eBay appraised of the situation all the way along (eBay actually called the Swindon sorting office to validate my request).
I phoned the seller's work, asked speak to him (he actually answered) and phoned the sorting office and got them to deliver the parcel to his workplace

Long drawn out business.

Never again.

Blimey!

You have to be careful; PayPal transactions often aren't covered by consumer credit rules because you aren't paying the supplier, you are paying PayPal who pay the supplier. Just something to be aware of.
