I watched this shocking movie for the first time this afternoon and was completely blown away by it.

I've since emptied my fridge and freezer of all animal products and went shopping for my new vegetarian lifestyle... Next to go will be my 3 pairs of leather shoes, belts and leather wallet. Also not eating or drinking diary products (actually quite surprised at how nice soya mile tatses :)) or eggs and egg products ...bye bye pasta and certain bakery items... sadly I forgot to buy egg-free pasta... rice will be OK.

It's a dramatic change but I feel so compelled after watching this documentary. I really do love animals and don't wish to be an accomplice to their pain and deaths.

Anyone here watched Earthlings or feel this way at all?

Er, no.

I got as far as:

With an in-depth study into pet stores, puppy mills and animals shelters,

...and gave up on the website. As someone who works in dog rescue, I can say there is a very small percentage of the world who fall into the above, but the vast majority of breeders and pet owners are caring, loving people but the website doesn't talk about this.

I watched a bit of the trailer......sorry, but it is dross (nicely shot though). It is easy to show suffering, but it is totally unbalanced just to show suffering.

A documentary which only shows one side isn't a documentary ~ it's just propaganda.

True, the movie did not give any nod towards humanely treated animal shelters and organic and free range animal farming. I think the point they were trying to make is that cruelty and murder of animals is wrong - that they have feelings too.

Also, as a dog rescuer, you should know that the movie spoke about the fact that over 50% of pets in the world are abandoned. Animal shelters aren't to blame.... Also, when you say that the vast majority are caring and loving, are you talking about the UK?

Perhaps you should watch the whole trailer or even the movie itself before calling it dross. A lot of it has more to do with the state of using animals for food and how they are treated in this system and also animals used for science. The message is that we share this planet with animals who possess intelligence similar to our own and in general we treat them worse that s***.

I make it a personal rule never to eat anything that can beat me at chess, I must admit it's come close once or twice.......

I've been there and done the whole veggie thing when I was about 15. Like most relapsed veggies, I succumbed to a bacon sandwich about 5 years later! Yes, there is animal cruelty in the world, but there is also people cruelty. I am an animal lover, but humans are designed to eat meat and plants which is why we have the type of teeth we do. Oh, and I love my leather sofa :p

Yes, but we're also aware that we can survive fine (and healthily) without eating animals.

I felt the same as you yesterday, by the way! This movie has definitely done well in convincing me!

We can survive without a lot of things.

Its human nature to eat meat products etc etc. As much as I love looking at cows grazing in a field, I like my steak rare, with a dash of english mustard and some chips drenched in salt and vinegar !

If I have a meal that contains NO meat, and is mostly veg and healthy stuff, my farts stink real bad and my wife complains, so you see, I MUST eat meat !

Yes, and humans can consciously change their nature if they so desire, if their sense of morality changed.

Good for you for having the "courage of your convictions" to carry this off
I also trust that should you become ill (God forbid)
that you will of course refuse medical assistance in the form of any drugs,
and other products.
And that you strictly check out which products are tested on animals.
( when they say they are not, it means the "product" itself most of the "ingredients" still are )

I hadn't thought of that, but now that it's been mentioned, it would be interesting to find out some more on this. Of course if I'm unconscious on an operating table, it might be a tad difficult for me to check the 'ingredients' ;)

I was refering to every day household products when I said
(And that you strictly check out which products are tested on animals.)
from shoe polish to shampoo, ant powder fly spray etc etc
Where as ( I think) that drugs and drug related products are still 100% tested or at least the seperate ingredients are.

OK- I got you. I will start checking out which household products are tested on animals and avoid them. The drugs issue is unnerving. The movie, I seem to recall, said that almost all testing that's done on animals is unnecessary as the final stage before going to market is of course human testing. Animal testing may give an indication to the scientists as to what the effects may be on humans, but until they've actually tested it on humans as well it can't go to market. So why test on animals in the first place?

Some of the crudest test are so obviously unnecessary - like testing sports and motorbike helmets on chimps - I really don't know why they are still allowed. Really disgusting stuff.

I buy my toiletries from LUSH as they don't test on animals, and all the ingredients are natural and organic :) Still won't stop eating meat, although I do try to buy organic free range traceable meat / poultry.

OK so if we all do not eat the product from a cow (for example) will there be any need for cows?, sheep? chickens?

will the farmers keep their fields for these animal if they are not selling them? - i think not

1,000,000 of animals that are currently being bred will no longer be needed, so will be extinct...

The message is that we share this planet with animals who possess intelligence similar to our own
i don't see any cows contributing to this thread...

animals kill and eat other animals - why shouldn't we...

soya kills sperm. i dont care how intelligent animals are they are prey species we are preditors. thats the way of things. and i like blue steak ( thatats less than rare) so why am i wrong to enjoy eating meat and super rare meat.i want a good reason why i should stop eating somethign i really enjoy

Hey guys, its up to you to decide.

I just can't stand the cruelty. I'm no longer blind to the horrible things that happen to billions of animals every year in the name of human food, clothing, medicine and entertainment. I feel it's wrong and we can all live without it.

So you ARE planning on refusing medical treatment, pain killers etc. Don't envy you a trip to the dentist, Ouch! As has been said, we are designed to eat meat. You would be better going organic, thus encouraging the humane treatment of our prey. I haven't met a healthy veggie yet and I know quite a few.

There is no way anyone can know what that figure is, unless you have checked with every village, town and city in every country in the world.

like testing sports and motorbike helmets on chimps

Really? Where? UK tests.

In The UK, the EU and the western world as a whole, animals are pretty well looked after. If there is any suffering, it would be beyond that......so please go and try to convert the third world, not us.

Do what you want (and as others have pointed out, almost everything in our world as some animal connection so you'll have almost nothing to eat, use or wear plus no medical treatments ever) but please stop preaching as if you are the only one who has seen the light.

Again all the info I've acquired since yesterday has been from this movie I've watched - I by know means have all the facts and figures double-checked. Also, if you checked my original post, I was merely asking if any TP's had gone down this path. I wasn't looking to start an argument, which you clearly think I have.

Amazing how I've upset so many people here. I'm not trying to convert anyone - just letting you know how I feel. Please continue eating meat and using animal products - as I said the choice is yours. You really don't have to hate me for this - I don't think what I've decided to do is wrong.

For anyone interested, Earthlings is available to watch on You Tube - just do a search.
