I am in the Market for a Dye Sub printer (second hand preferably to keep costs down) with the exception of eBay, can anyone recommend where I may be able to pick one up from?

I am getting more and more bookings for events that require onsite printing so have decided to get myself some onsite printing equipment. I will also be using it to print from home for orders I receive via my website for the various sports and dance shows that I do. Orders for which seem to gradually drip feed in, so rather than paying for postage constantly from a pro lab I would prefer to print from home (with the exception on larger prints of course)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated (including which models to avoid etc.)

Ideally I want to be able to print a few different sizes etc.

Many thanks.

I wanted to buy a second hand one, but there are very few about & was a bit dubious as to why they were up for sale.
In the end I bought a new Mitsubishi 9800DW & it's been fantastic.
You'll struggle being able to do different sizes without keep changing the media as it's set up to print specific sizes (6" roll will only do 8x6 & 9x6 for example) but 5" rolls are available so you could then do 7x5's, although if it's just the odd one I'll print a 5x7 on a 6" roll then cut the print out, but it's a bit of a faff.
Either System Insight, or Photomart might have ex demo's for sale at some point?
Worth trying them both, I've dealt with both & never had any issues with either.

Bit of advice. When you buy second hand , be careful. You need to be sure that if it is a Mitsubishi , that it is a DW version, not DWS ( as this only works with a Click Touch Screen head unit). Check how many prints have been through it, wether it has been used in retail ( with a kiosk).

Keep well clear of an Olmec OP600, getting medi ais difficult unless you want 6x4".

Keep an eye on the classifieds over the weekend, I'm seriously toying with selling my Hiti p510s as I've only used it for 2 events plus some home printing.

However, I'm not 100% sure as yet, and any sale will definately go through the usual forum rules!

Cheers for all the advise, it's much appreciated.

Barney - I'll keep an eye out, pal, cheers.

If you want a printer that can print different paper sizes then check out the new Mitsubishi D707.

2 printers in a single chassis, you can load and print two different print sizes.

Not cheap, but to my knowledge there's nothing else on the market like this, and they work a treat.

Yes Jeremy is right , that machine is pretty much unique to my knowledge.

Just one thing , in terms of different print sizes, it is worth bearing in mind that the most common size that event guys print is 6x9". In addition most satndard dye sub printers are able to print 6x9, 7x5 , and 6x4 - it is just a case of changing the media over.

My personal preference is DNP and I have both DS40 & DS80. DS40 can print from 6x4 upto 9x6 (with media change). Not cheap but certainly worth checking on any current deals Photomart (sole importers) may have. Its also worth doing your sums on cost per print as the cheaper printers can have the dearer media costs.

Avoid second hand dye subs as there's a very good chance they've had a hard life, unless of course you know the person selling it personally.

For the amount of margin you'll be amking at events, and the paces you'll put it trough, you'll be pleased you bought one brand new - I also looked for a 2nd hand one and was hard pushed to find one at a knockdown price that hadn't been hammered.

My choice would also be a DNP DS40, half the size of a low of Misti's and reliable - they also keep winning the "Shoot out" competitions each year - so can't be bad eh?

Good luck!

Mike
