Just a moan:bang:

Have 2 cars i havent drove one of them for 13 months now and its been laid up my driveway and not used(sorn declared) this has my private plate on cost me thousands. Now i want to transfer the plate off my old car and put it on my other one but just been in touch with DVLA who inform me that both cars have to be taxed and MOT'D before the transfer can take place oh and of course there is a charge for this.

I dont mind the charge but making me tax and mot both cars in order to transfer the reg from one to the other is bleedin crazy if you ask me. So now in order to keep the private plate i paid thousands for i have to fork out dead money to mot a car that is not worth mot'ing and.......aggghhhhhhhhhh:bang::bang::bang::bang:

What a bloody farse

This isn't a new rule, it was introduced years ago, possibly decades ago. I vaguely remember the change, but it was a very long time ago I'm sure. How long have you had the plate?

I'd tell them to stick their tax and MOT on the other car were the sun doesn't shine and to transfer your damn plate over or you'll "get the boys round".

Something like that, anyway.

Ive had the plate about 7 years now wouldnt mind but they told me that if id done it all within 12 months i would be ok but its 13 months now. Now im thinking what if the car doesnt pass its MOT or it costs thousands to put right then what:shake: looks like i would have to loose out on my plate:nono:

The whole thing stinks if you ask me i just dont see why WHY?

:sulk:

DVLA own your registration plate. They own every reg plate. They charged you the thousands of pounds for the privilege of having it on your car.

If you scrap the car, they'll want the plate back.

Just another way for them to make money, stinks really !!

You'll have to MOT the car if you want to keep the plate.

I think the rules came in as personalised plates were starting to take off and number plates were being taken off all sorts of old junk. It was to exert a level of control and maintain the value of the record.

The use of plates as a money making venture by the DVLA followed on much later.

I can remember the excitement of getting the first car with a date letter in the plate, you had really arrived then. All those old plates were behind you.

Odd that they are now worth so much. My first two cars were HKN18 and WPR316, my mum's car at the time was TOC128.

I was chuffed to get KMP284K, which was worthless!

what he said, its to stop people buying old log books (without the car) relate to vehicles and old scrap cars just for the plates so they can transfer them to other vehicles.

cheapest way to get a personalised plate is deedpoll...!

That really is rotten! :( Would make me cross!

Hope you manage to get it sorted,

Does the MOT have to be completely legit? :suspect: :)

that would be the obvious one, dodgy MOT, tax it, swap the plate to the other vehicle and then claim the tax back (loose 1 months tax).

not that i condone that behaviour in the slightest of course!

The old trick used to be to transfer the number over to an old moped and then all you had to store was the frame, but the DVLA brought in all those new rules (including charging a fee to transfer a number) to stop that sort of thing. Unfortunately lots of innocent people also ended up getting landed with a charge too.

My parents car was stolen and the DLVA informed them if they wanted the plate back they'd have to pay the transfer fee or lose it - it wouldn't have been so bad if we hadn't promised to return the plate to the original owner just before the car was nicked :bonk:

Well if you can pay for two cars and thousands for just a numberplate, what's the big deal. Chillax.

Well its affecting how much moneys left from my giro every week now isnt it, i have 7 kids and dont work and claim benefits and i need 2 cars. I got a loan from the benefit system to pay for the plate so therfore its mine isnt it and theres no way im giving it back.:D:D:D:D

jerk

Get an MOT for it (if you know a "firendly" MOT place, 6 months tax, take the plate off, declare it sorn and claim the tax back, wont cost that much and saves you the plate

:nono::police::lol:

Do they still inspect the donor vehicle before allowing transfers?

not to my Knowledge
have transferred mine across two cars, both times just going into the DVLA office, they sort out the paperwork after you fill a form in (cant remember which one now) and then send out th enew tax disk etc to you so you can then put it on the car

I remember years ago taking an old Moggy Minor to get the plate transferred off it and I had to take it to a multi storey car park in Glasgow where two guys from the DVLA appeared from the shadows to give the car the once over, before the number could be swapped over. It was all very clandestine - like something out an old B movie :suspect:

No, its the property of the DVLA (and always will be) which you paid to have assigned to your car. Now you want to move it to another car you have to pay to have it reassigned

yes i know i have to pay thats not the issue its the fact that they make you MOT both cars and tax both cars before transfreing
that im moaning about uneducated Rick

and then charge me to transfer it :shake:

They were much more fun and much more helpful in former times, then people started to abuse the system and eventually the Government saw an oportunity to make some money. The problem reported here though goes back to sorting out the abuse, the auction of cherished plates by the DVLA and the holding back of any good ones is a relatively recent add on.

When I was restoring a 1948 tractor that had never been registered I just rang them up and they gave me a spare number from 1948 that they reserved awaiting my letter of application.

233 DEL it was.

The thing that makes me laugh about the DVLA is they'll sell you a plate for thousands that can only be made to look like anything by mis-spacing the numbers then tell you not to mis-space the numbers .
