Some of you may remember I won this last year. Well it's back.

Bike Vistas is back, but not as you know it!

Last year, you helped to make Bike Vistas II a phenomenal success, and we're aiming for a repeat performance!

We are again appealing for the best images to showcase the leading scenic rides both here and abroad. This year we're sprucing up the competition by including humorous and motorsport categories.

We're giving away a pair of tickets to gain entry into the International Motorcycle and Scooter Show at Birmingham's NEC (between November 28 and December 7) to those photographers behind the top 12 shots.

Best of luck.

Yes, they only show the good ones Matt.:naughty:

Seriously it isn't an instant upload like here, they add them when they get round to it.

Oi :bat:

Ahh right, i shall wait and see then :)

Oh and jpwone I think it is to cover there own backs so they dont get in trouble :)

Ok maybe rights grab was not absolutely correct. In fact it is even worse as not only will the organiser gain the right to use the image but so will anyone else should they choose to do so.

There are typically 3 scenarios with these competitions.

1. You surrender copyright to the organiser on entry. You have no further rights to the image and if applied to its fullest you cannot even keep a copy of your entry for your own use.

2. On entry you deem the image copyright free. This means that anyone can use the image as there is now no copyrights applied to the image. Someone could view the image on the organisers web site, decide they like it and use it on their own web site and they would be entitled to do this.

3. On entry you give the organiser a licence to use the image for the purpose of the competition and promotion of the competition and other purposes that they specify at the time of entry. Copyright remains with the entrant. Check the BBC web site for their conditions for the submission of images and it will give you an idea of the type of licence, the extent of the licence and the duration of licence that the BBC uses. Copyright and commercial rights (if any) remain with the photographer.

The third option is obviously the better option for the photographer and in practice gives the organiser all the rights they need to use the image as well.

All the above assumes that the image is not restricted in use (conditions may have applied when and where the image was made) and does not require model or property releases (dependant upon the organisers intended use).

Hope this helps.

Read the OP. Ian won it. I think he would have warned us about anything like that. Understand where you are coming from mind :)

Well at least it is different to last year's paranoia about speed (sorry safety) cameras appearing on all of the biking communities favourite roads. They didn't sell any of the images to anyone last year. The only place it appeared was in MCN announcing the winner and in the calendar which was given away free at the NEC motorcycle show. They aren't trying to make money out of the images directly they are simply trying to promote the personalised registrations side of the DVLA. If you're worried, don't enter, simple as. But if I'd taken that attitude I wouldn't have got a new helmet, a pair of tyres, a pair of gloves and a day out with Chippy Wood, photographer with Bike Magazine.:woot:

LOL

Paranoia might be a bit strong :-) With any of these 'competitions' make sure you read the rules. That is the purpose of my post and no other. No, I wont be entering because I like to keep copyright of my images.

From the organisers perspective they have probably got a cheap bunch of images they can use. From an entrants perspective you have a chance of winning a prize but win or lose you surrender your copyright.

There are more and more of these 'competitions' (the last one I saw was in the English Heritage magazine). They really have a single purpose and it is to collect, cheaply, images they can use with no or little restrictions.

If you had not won you would have surrendered all rights to your image for nothing. That does not sound quite as nice does it ? So yes, I have adapted an 'attitude' or taken a stance that wherever I see these 'competitions' I will read the rules and wherever the entrants lose copyright as part of entry I will draw this to the entrants attention. I assume you are happy with this as a condition of entry. I am not. Take out the surrender of copyright and make it a licensed usage and it would be far fairer and transparent to the entrants and still give the organiser the usage they require.

Hope this clarifies my position. I'm not trying to pee in the water for the sake of it but trying to ensure that anyone who enters does so with their eyes open and is fully aware of what the cost of entry is ie. the image they submit.

Matt, have you had an email from DVLA yet? The gallery has been updated with more pics. If yours is in there you're shortlisted.

Silly question, but is the prize just a couple of tickets to the motorcycle show? Thta doesn't seem much compared to what you (iansmart) got last year?

Pretty much, but they had a sponsor last year which provided the prize, guess that didn't materialise this year. But then I'm still waiting for my day out with Chippy too!

What did you win Ian?

I am entering for two reasons:

1, It will look good on my photography CV. I want to be a photographer in later life.

2, to make my family even more proud of what I have acheveid this year :)

It was actually £500 to spend which bought the above. They also presented me with a framed copy of my picture which I gave to my parents as I already had a poster size print framed with a copy of the MCN article underneath. And of course two tickets to the NEC and as many copies of the calendar for this year as I could carry away with me for friends and family.

So anyone else had an email about the final judging yet? :whistling:

So which one got through Matt? This is mine they've asked for a high res version of.

Probably today or tomorrow, was only a day after I was asked to send a hi res version through I found out last year.

If I told you, I'd have to kill you.:schtum::lol:

You obviously have a death wish!:cuckoo::lol:

Okay so now I can tell you without killing you. Sorry Matt, but the old dog beat the young whippersnapper in the motorsport category. Just had confirmation that the tickets to the show will be winging their way to me asap. :woot:

Well done

Ah well you see....

sorry to inform you but this whippersnapper is as good as the old dog :D:D:D:D:D

Two tickets on there way to me!! :woot::woot::woot:

Well congrats to you too, on your second place:lol::lol:

What day are you going? I'll make sure I stand in front of you at every opportunity!:lol::lol:

So have you got your calendars yet Matt?
