As above. Is there any easy (and, more importantly) LEGAL way to get DVDs onto an iPod? Some things I want to watch aren't available on iPlayer but I've got them on DVD.
 
technically all ripping is a breach of copyright, however the rise in mobile devices means this legislation is ridiculously out of date. as long as you own the original disk im sure you'll be fine though.

to the original question, try handbrake.

Does handbrake do it by itself? Or do you need another program running alongside which can deal with copy-protection as I thought handbrake was really for transcoding? :thinking:
[more accurately, I've never managed to succesfully rip anything with handbrake!]

i dont normally use it (use a combo of makemkv and ripbot, but mkv wont work on apple), but yeah it does (link for mac but windows will be about the same):

anydvd is good for copy protection.. (sorry mods if thats not allowed)
 
Sorry for delay in response - got sidetracked!

I'd found handbrake but it seems to be a converter and I'm after something that I can slot in a DVD at one end and synch the result onto an iPod rather than many stages. I would be happy to pay for the iTunes download IF what I was after was available... It's mainly for watching on flights where there's no film shown - might have to just use the portable DVD player.
 
Thanks for taking the time to respond Neil - maybe when the laws get changed to allow personal use of media across platforms a load of hitherto unreleased software will become available! (In our dreams...)

I use Aiseesoft Blu-Ray to iPad Ripper which is simplicity itself - insert DVD (or BD) - select the main feature - press convert. Then copy the resulting file to my Seagate Wireless Plus.
 
Frank, that BBC story is 6 months old and the concept is even older. I was hoping there was a completely legal way to do the deed but since there doesn't seem to be (here, yet!), I'll make do with what we've got - I've still got Senna to watch in August and will visit the iStore to see what else is making like a Blackbird (going cheep...)

I was pleasantly surprised as to how watchable an iPod is - I did a quick comparison of the viewing size compared to the plane screens and there was little or no visible difference. Possibly not ideal for a very visual film at first watching but for the Blues Brothers and MP's Holy Grail, it was perfect!

I've never been one for blindly following laws - especially the stupid ones. I'm totally against people getting digital copies of fils and music they haven't bought. But I have no moral problem with copying films/music to my ipod/ipad/iphone.

Do you really listen to all of your old music collection on CD, or have you bought it all again on iTunes. Or, have you used iTunes to convert it to digital - just as illegal, just as moral.

Finally, how many people have been convicted of making electronic copies of
music they already own? Clue - it's very close to zero.

I use freemake video converter. Does loads of formats including iPad. Simple to use too ;-)

1 click dvd converter is a good program i used this a lot to back up my dvds to my media players

I used to use MacTheRipper but it has not been updated for Lion or Mountain Lion.
