Dust in lens - faulty?

Yes
I've sold a lens elsewhere and the buyer is complaining there is some dust inside the front element.

Would you class this as a "faulty" lens? Most lenses over a few years seem to have this imho.

Would depend on how much dust and what the condition was described as when advertised, yes i agree dust inside the front element is not unusual and normally doesn't effect the picture quality but if the lens was described as "optics excellent"then optics excellent is what i would expect

As above, all lenses have some dust - it'd have to be extreme to be worth returning over. What focal length is the lens? If it's wideangle and the speck(s) is/are big then the buyer may have a point.

It's a 17-70. The optics were never described as "excellent". I simply answered a query that it "was in full working order".

I must admit I didn't notice any dust myself. It's been my walkabout lens for about a year and I've had no problem with it.

You could explain to the buyer to try it before it goes any further.
Or refund the money and get the lens back.
or refund him the price of a clean/service.

I would hate to think that I bought a lens and it was not as described i.e one or two particals of dust.
Good luck with what ever happens

would you class dust as being not as described? All I was asked was if the lens was in full working order.

The cost of a service isn't possible. The lens was only £140 all in.

Tell him that he paid to look through your lens not at it !

Dust will not affect the image quality in any meaningfull way - just look at all the Canon 17-55 f2.8 lenses with some dust inside.

Optics excellent does not usually refer to absence of dust but to the optics performance. Every single lens (except the new one from the factory package) will have a dust inside (whether visible directly or under some extreme lighting). It does not usually affect the optics unless there is too much of it.

To OP, I would ask for a shot that demonstrates the dust effect on the photo and if he/she can't prove it then won't take it as a valid complaint.

Did you note the serial number of your lens before you sent it to him? If so, ask for a shot of the dust he is complaining about from an angle that shows the serial number....

Cynic? Me? Never. :D

Dust in a lens is inevitable and will have no impact on picture quality.

It doesn't bother me at all, but if I'm selling a lens, I'll always document dust. A lot of people fret over it but any lens that has an extending barrel when zooming will suck in dust - it's normal. Even new lenses can have dust in.

I vaguly remember a long time ago a similar question arose and someone actually stuck a small stamp on the fromt of a lens and showed two picures - one before and one after - and apart from a loss of light there was little difference in quality.

So a few spacks of dust will make no difference at all.

This is good reading. I just noticed a tiny spec of dust in one of my lenses and was freaking out but if it's quite normal then i won't worry :D. Have to say, can't see it in any photo's i've took but i was just concerened it was there
