Hi
A friends sister has asked me to take a photo of her and her husband releasing a Chinese lantern from a bridge at dusk.

I will be about 35feet away. I was thinking of using settings f4 on aperture priority with iso800 and 2nd curtain sync for flash.

Any comments on those setting for s starting point or any other advise?

tbh, no one will really be able to help because no one will know the lightening conditions.

Yeah fair point,
Will Pop to the location first and do a few test shots

Cant you do a couple of test shots with them first? Rain? wind? fog hahahaha I've so been there. You must be prepared for everything ... even the lantern sinking instead of going up. Its never going to be the way it should :)

Good luck .... you poor tog

I've got footage somewhere of one starting to go up, being hit by a gust of wind and smacking some lad and dog in the face and just burning up, everyone was ok :)

I had my first experience with chinese lanterns

cue the hilarious scenes of crowds running away from a rogue lantern!

Take some test shots before they do it and remember to expose for them, not the lantern. If they are wanting a great shot, you should be the one to call when they release it, don't try to react to them doing it as you are almost certain to not get the shot you want.

Oh, and for gods sake shoot in raw! At least if the exposure isn't perfect you can tweak it a little later. JPEG would be a huge mistake (though you should be shooting in raw anyway!)

Good luck!

I did some test shots and got a few of them trying to release the lantern but as some have already said it never goes to plan.
They lit the lantern and let it go but the slight breeze blew it down to the ground and it burnt on the floor.

They were just glad they didn't do it to a crowd as first planned. Nevermind at least they tried

Thanks for all the replys
