I have used a D800 on a number of sliders when doing some review work and the best advice I can give is get one with decent adjustable bearings. You may get lucky and find a Konova K2 second hand for around your budget depending on the length that you are looking for. Otherwise I have found that several companies sell what they call a heavy duty slider, have a look for Sevenoak and Movo on Amazon and ebay. These have very solid rails with metal bearing on the carriages that can be adjusted, they may not be the best, but for the price they are much better than many of the other budget options.
For what its worth I have now found that I am doing so much work with sliders that I have upgraded to a fully motorised set up and have found that it really has been worth it.
Now if only I could play half as well as him!
This is the sort of heavy duty slider I mean, they come in several lengths and are rebranded by at least two companies. In the spirit of disclosure I am selling one of these since I have upgraded and now have too many sliders so I may be a bit biased. Just steer clear of friction sliders, cheap carbon fibre, plastic bearings and you will probably be ok.
