I am photographing a relative's wedding abroad later this year. It will be an outdoor wedding.

They are planning quite a relaxed day and not really worried about style of photos. I'm sure they'll be pleased with them.

With regards to video - they would just like the actual ceremony/vows captured. Nothing fancy, just a camera plonked on a nearby tripod to record it for memories. And this is where I haven't got a clue!

My main DSLR is a Canon 50D so no video there. I can use a Panasonic TZ8 but TBH I've only ever done a test video with it, I don't know what quality is like or whether I can adjust anything.

I'll be getting another backup DSLR at some point and if needs be, I can stretch to a 500D/1100D which have basic video functions.

Question: Will I notice much difference in either video or audio quality between one of the basic Canon DSLR's and a TZ8?
 
don't get the 500d whatever you do

the 550d for the body is not much more (and with a 50d you msut already have lenses) and the video capabilities of the 550 is soooooooo much better, and you would notice a big difference

i was reluctant to spend the extra, but now i have, i am happy to have done so and think it was well worth the extra cash
 
I would use a proper camcorder tbh. You will need a decent depth of field for the ceremony and its likely to last over the 12 minute limit on DSLRs.

So true. The 550D video played back on a 1080P TV can be quite good.
Here's a link to a vid I shot "on the fly" using the 550D and a Rokinon 8mm fisheye lens. I was shooting photos with the Canon when I decided to try a video.
