DSCL fine art prints

chalk and cheese from what?

standard gloss prints using a pigment inkjet look different to standard machine prints look different. The surfaces are also a huge influence here - only the FB Distinction is a gloss black paper but it won't look like a standard shiny gloss. The other 3 papers are matt black papers.

the FB has a high white gloss finish

they will be different to any type of machine print as they are make by pigment inks - I've not seen what the surface of the paper is like so can't comment on what they will actually look like.

I just had a large image of Ta Prohm in Cambodia printed on the distinction paper and its a beautiful print. However saying that their cheap prints are great too and the price difference is bigger than the quality difference. However the distinction paper feels really high quality

Got my prints, overall happy but the lustre prints are more or less the same quality as the distinction ones! Much cheaper too. I'll be getting the lustre ones next time not the distinction, as there's hardly any difference imo. Great quality though, nice vibrant colours. Definitely use them again!

Nick, which service did you use for the lustre prints - Online or Fine Art?

I uploaded them all via the online portal, resized them in Photoshop, I made them 15x10 canvas size with a 12x8 print in the middle so there was space around the image for mounting onto 16x12 mounts. I used the pre sized pre corrected option, they are all slightly darker in print than on my computer but in using a laptop with an uncalibrated screen that seems to fairly bright. That's my fault that the prints are dark though, can't fault the quality.

I meant which service did you use (for the lustre prints),

Have you got a calibrator?

Nah I dont have a calibrator unfortunately,

Well worth getting one if you're going to do a lot of prints. Steer clear of the Eye One Display 2 though (I had one and the gels changed colour rendering it useless).

I used the online photo print service for the lustre prints matey

So Fuji DPII paper - it's a shame they don't do a matt surface in this range.

I would have liked some matt prints.

Me too - I think they look much better in a lot of cases, especially b&w. Fuji do make a matt paper but DSCL didn't think it produced the same quality results as Fuji's lustre.

Going to look into buying a calibrator and a standalone monitor rather than my laptop screen I think

X-Rite's Colormunki models are good (and they don't have the gel issue of the Eye One Display2).
