So I was on the computer, and I had just finished editing photos of my new car. As I stood up, the strap caught on the arm of the chair and long story short, my lens pretty much face-planted the carpet.
Tried to take the lens off and it was jammed on to the camera, after struggling with it for a few seconds it came off, but a ring of plastic from the back of lens fell off, and I also noticed that the focal length markers didn't line up correctly. So I replace the plastic ring, and twist the lens back into alignment. I put the lens back on the camera and it all seemed to work fine (I was amazed). But since looking at the photos I can see now that when the lens is wide open its really blurry (nasty looking too) as I stop down it sharpens up. Its a Tamron 17-50 2.8 (non IS), it seems to be its normal sharpness by f4-5 its just in the lowest few stop positions where it's blurry.

I know I'm asking a lot here, but do any of you guys have any idea how bad this kind of damage is likely to be? The lens was £260 new, and I guess it's not worth spending too much on fixing it, but if it could be done for £50-80 I'd probably get it fixed.

I guess I'm kind of hoping it something not too bad, because the lens still works perfectly in all other areas it's just the soft wide aperture.
Is it worth trying to take the lens apart myself, to see if I can find the damage or is this kind of thing going to be too technical for a non professional, I'm quite handy with electronics and mechanical things?

Such a pain in the lug nuts, I was excited about getting a new (used) motor, and I let my guard slip, I suppose the good thing is I'm too poor to afford an L lens, so it could of been worse, and the camera was fine, so y'know I shouldn't be too negative lol

Cheers!

Does your house insurance cover you...very often it does.... little chance at all of fixing it yourself.

Hi Adrian

Personally, I think it would be more than £50-80 to repair if it's snapped off as you say...I'd be looking for a replacement lens - if you were happy with it, I think they go for mid £100's 2nd hand, so potentially not worth repairing it. I'd be tempted to put a wanted ad up on here and see if / what responses you get...

Alternately, a good time to upgrade maybe ???

I know it's not a Sigma but I dropped my 70D with a Siggy 17-50 fitted and broke the lens in half at the collar where the AF buttons are. Sigma charged £120 to repair it to include new buttons and a free hood (that had cracked)

You might get the same kind of service with Tamron so it wouldn't hurt to ask. Sigma sent me all the paperwork to fill in for the estimate and then contacted me once they had received it back. All I had to do then was send it off.

I once dropped a camera with lens attached. It was a D70s and and 18-70 lens. Knackered both, but I guess dropping it onto the pavement didn't help. So as you said, on the plus side, at least the camera is ok and as for the lens, as Harriers9 said above, you may find it's not overly expensive to get it fixed.
