My driving licence renewal reminder documents arrived by post yesterday. DVLA advised online renewal due to being faster.

Halfway through completing the on line form up pops "SERVICE TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE DUE TO SYSTEM MAINTENANCE. TRY AGAIN LATER".

Is that official speak for a cock up etc. ?

More likely to be system maintenance carried out while there's nobody in the office!

I thought they were still all working from home.

They barely work when they're in the office!!!

Actually, they work quite hard, as do most civil servants in the UK.

It's a stupid myth put about by the ill informed that they are lazy, incompetent or both. The truth is that they are struggling to put into practice the insane rules created by politicians, who have no idea of what the Civil Service does or the consequences of giving it inane legislation to put into real world practice.

It's because they do maintenance/update/upgrades when it's statistically going to affect fewest people. It's a totally transparent message.

If they didn't do the maintenance and it all fell over at (say) 9am on Monday or got hacked by the Russians I suspect the Daily Mail would be first in the queue to bemoan the lack of maintenance etc

DVLA website still showing "SERVICE TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE DUE TO SYSTEM MAINTENANCE. TRY AGAIN LATER".

Perhaps it is a big job and the techs want enough spare time avaiable in case problems occur before the Monday rush.

Fair enough work/maintenance has to be done but would have thought there would have been a big note /pop up on the website advising about the maintenance to be carried out.

Sure, and they should (in my opinion) have put an expected duration lor end time on the notice.

Of course it may be that the outage is unplanned and the maintenance is to bring it back to life in a controlled fashion

Just watched Lucy Worsley's presentation about "The Princes in the Tower".

What is the relevance to this current discussion? That, like the (allegedly) missing children, we have absolutely no way of knowing what happened to cause the message to appear on Doug's screen. :naughty: :coat:

Having had the misfortune of having to try to deal with them a few years ago (just getting through to the correct department was a struggle), I have zero sympathy for them. The "help" line seems to be manned by the broadest Welsh accented English speakers as to be almost incomprehensible too.

Yip, if a big job was planned maintenance or upgrade I think that starting at midnight Saturday would have been logical, but starting at Noon on Sunday seems much less so (maybe it was expected to be a small job that went Pete Tong).

DVLA website up and running before 2300.
Application form completed without a hitch.

So far so good. Fingers crossed new licence arrives as quickly as they forecast (about one week for online applications).

Email from DVLA this morning acknowledging my application and stating that new licence may take 2 weeks.
They also reminded to cut my old licence in two and send it to them. I think I'll hold onto it until my new one arrives :cautious:

From recent experience, I think there may be a tick box excercise, that someone has checked the old licence has been received.

Photocopy the card then cut it up and send it (the cut card, not the copy!) to them.

Tell them you sent it and blame Royal Mail?

I've now renewed my licence twice on-line with the last one done 3 weeks ago with the new licence arrived in two days. Pretty good service I think.

I submitted my online application for driving licence renewal at 2300 last Sunday.
New licence delivered at 1000 this morning.

Excellent service.

When I last did mine it came back with about 7 years validity, about to complain when I realised it would take me to my 70th birthday, still charged full price for 70% term!
