Hi guys, I'm after a Dremel type drill/multi tool.

Dremel are quite expensive, what other tools are available, what is a good alternative please?

Draper do a cheap version ;) But a small mutli-tool requires precision and control, I'd say you get what you pay for, and you always pay for it. Although the cheaper options may be good enough for you depending on what you want to use it for and how often.

Black and decker do one that's very powerful ,also at times Aldi and Lidl have them in ,as stated depends what your use is for

Thanks for the advice all, much appreciated.

I have learnt in the past that you only get what you pay for, I may end up using this tool a great deal, so I'm edging toward Dremel.

I bought one from maplins years ago. Wasn't dear, but still going strong. Used it loads of times. They still sell them. It's yellow.

It really does depend on what you intend to do with the tool, i'd recommend getting something with as powerful a motor as possible.

Sounds preachy but... there's a reason why the saying "buy cheap buy twice" exists, buy the best you can afford and even save up for better if you can.

I bought one in Woolworths closing down sale for a couple of quid, still going strong although I would buy the Dremel if I wanted it for more serious work

Bottom price... Yes probably get what you pay for.
Top price/name...paying mainly for name.
Mid range...good value/life.
Simples. :-)

you do get what you pay for , in these type of tools, I do alot of carving and use these for all the fine work,i started off with a Dremel ,then went on to the more expensive ones £300 plus, when you buy a good one you dont get fatigued by using it for long hours , you get more vibration from cheaper models, plus the bearings get very hot, if running at full speed, but it all depends on what you will be using it for, dremels are good value, but not the best.

Happy with my Dremel use it for lots of things.

Jak, only just seen your post so not sure if you have bought one or not yet but I have a Dremel in the hut sitting doing nothing. It is in used condition but if you think it will be of use to you you are welcome to have it for the sake of covering postage (no more than a fiver probably)
It doesn't come with any tools but should still have the chuck attached to it.
If you want i will put a photo up tonight of the actual item and let you decide from there.

In the meantime to give you a rough idea, it looks a bit like this one

No worries, like i say i will post a photo of the actual dremel tonight and you can confirm if you still want it.
I would rather see it go to good use than lying around doing nothing.

I'll definitely have Dremel Stuart, if you have PayPal I'll gift you some monies (y)

Ok no worries.
