Just on the ITV news that the Heathrow Dreamliner fire was caused by the battery in the emergency beacon.!

I'm extremely glad I'm not the buyer for Boeing's batteries...

There was something on the box about this last night. From memory, that ELT is a backup of a backup, an urgent recommendation has gone out to all carriers using it to switch it off until more is known - currently there is only an interim report, and things could change.

A pilot was quoted as saying that there is so much technology contained both on the aircraft and in liferafts that it just doesn't matter whether that ELT works or not.

What seems to concern everyone more, is the speed at which the fire took hold and the problems they had putting it out, which would have been impossible had it occurred in flight.

It will also be interesting to see how they repair the Ethiopian 787. Traditional construction would have meant the replacement of a few aluminium panels and ribs. Boeing however, produce the 787 in complete barrel sections with carbon fibre being wound and then baked (here)

Presumably not as cheap as a guy on site with a few sheets of tin and a rivet gun.

Interesting clip
Presumably they have a repair method to hand. Not economically viable to write off a hull with just a small amount of damage.
