Rather shocking news, which doesn't appear to be an early April Fools' prank: DP Review is shutting up shop on April 10th :-(

I've been reading the site since before the Nikon Coolpix 900 was a camera to dream of. It will leave quite a hole in global coverage of camera news.

Just seen that. It’s come as a great shock to me as a reader since it first started. Amazon are really being ruthless these days.

Somewhat gobsmacked to read that !!!!

IIRC the original was sold by its UK owner some few years back and I must admit that change did affect my user experience on the site but I stuck with it.

C'est la vie :(

Same here, I can’t quite believe it. I’m on there most days having a good read.
Sad news.

Saw this earlier. I used to use the DPreview site a lot. Shame it's going to close.

Oh dear, that's a shame. I didn't use the forums much, dipping in every week or so, and I entered a couple of the challenges but found the users didn't like my photo style :D

I used to use their databases and comparisons, so it will be a shame to lose those.

Yep just got an email. Great site and such a shame.
is it true it is now owned by Amazon?
Been Amazon-owned for a good few years.

Amazon have just announced many job losses!

Hopefully someone else will take up the reigns ,these type of sites never die

I enjoy visiting DPR watching and reading the reviews.
Some of the forums are a good knowledge resource too.

Hopefully Chris N will surface somewhere else soon.

It looks like all the old style sites are closing. Soon there will only be social media style left.
And that does not cater well to serious discussion and learning.
I entirely echo your thoughts. There's something about a forum community that no Facebook group can replace. I feel mostly lost in 'modern' social media type space, for me a forum offers that structure & organisation I 'need' to retain information.

Very sad news indeed :(

b****r. I always thought that it was a mistake selling out to the Americans.

DPR has the best, most analytical camera reviews around and I use it's camera comparison chart regularly.

I hope that they leave the website online as a legacy.

The information on the linked page sadly says that even as "read only" site, it will be for an unstated limited time :(

As we speak someone will be backing it up just need to find out who haha, cant cost much to run static pages

That's a shame always been one of my favourite sites for news and reviews, hopefully something will eventually replace it
I doubt it. Everything is moving away from formal websites and forums and towards social media. They are easier to monetize.

In the late nineties, DP Review set the standard for online reviews of just about anything, not just cameras. They established a clear, repeatable model that allows you to make precisely those kinds of comparisons between different products.

I stopped reading the reviews once they started doing more youtube videos, I suspect Chris & Jordan will set up their own channel.

The forums are useful sometimes but generally it's just a load of blokes arguing and insisting that what they own is the best and nobody else's view matters.

I have used dpreview for many years. The forum, like this one, is an amazing resource and a place to share information - help resolve issues and so on.
What a shame! - and so quickly executed by Amazon - they seem to be cost cutting fairly deeply all over the place. Wonder what else they own that we dont know about?

Whilst I appreciate your sentiment, I think that comment is a bit disingenuous as they've owned DP Review since May 14th 2007 - almost 16 years.

Amazon, having terminally damaged loads of businesses across the world, are finding out what it is like when times get tough.

If it wasn’t for the damage done (e.g. with DP Review) I’d say karma.

When I saw the email today it came as a shock. :$

Obviously it has not been as active as in previous peak years there, but which photo based site has, but still quite active from what I could see. You would have hoped, with or without Amazon's backing, it was a sustainable business. With Amazon's backing, them closing it down is very poor.

Here and there are the sites I visit most. Whilst the Nikon Pro DX SLR (D500, D300, D200, D100) Talk forum slowed to a trickle of contributions, :(understandably, when I got the Sony RX100's there has been a lot of info on the different versions of those cameras in the Sony Cyber-shot Talk forum, which I have found useful. And that forum has been quite active, even given the death of compact cameras towards phones.

I feared that Amazon would have had a more detrimental affect on the site than they ended up doing when they bought it. And that it seems to have been 2007 when they took it over. :$ That I would have guessed 2012-13, indicates to me what little changed. That Amazon now seem to be just ending it will be the ultimate negative effect though.

So much knowledge and history about photography to disappear in one go. :jawdrop: So sad. :(

A real shame, an excellent resource and great detailed reviews. Some great posters too on their forums but the whole website was far more than just a forum. Will be sadly missed.

I was unclear - I meant that the announcement was today and the closure date is only April 10th - 3 weeks. I did know that they had owned Dpreview for some time though hadn't realised it was that long.

Tangent after seeing some mod mods. Why are we not allowed to mention other forums? We are a community no? And not a business?

E.g our large format gathering here is small and there is lots of advice on another well renowned forum which has tonnes of information

Or do we have a specific resource sharing thread?

Thanks!
