DP or HDMI for monitor connections?

Hi all

I am, in advance of buying, looking at finally getting a new monitor

Now, many monitors have the choice of HDMI, DP and some include the DVI connectors.

Of the ones I have been looking at (BenQ) they have HDMI (v2.0) and DP (v1.4) ports, my nVidia GTX1050Ti has the DVI and HDMI (v2.0.b) & DP(v1.4)........so fully compatible

I recall reading that DP is the better of the newer 'kids on the block' for monitor connectivity but is it?

If DP is best the BenQ's only include a DP to mDP, so I would need a full DP to DP cable and therein lies my confusion because there does seem to be some variation between DP v1.2 compliant and v1.4 compliant. Not all cables are made equal it seems and some mention that they will handle say QHD but do not state that they are v1.4 compliant!!!

Therefore, I would welcome some advice as to a make & model/version number of cables I should be considering

Personally I'd go DP because the connectors have a positive click and need a positive release. I wouldn't lose sleep over being "forced" to use HDMI though.

I also emailed a supplier that I trust (to ask the question of BenQ was too much like jumping through hoops) and the CSC agent linked me to two versions of a suitable DP to DP cable ~ one costing approx £18 and the other approx £7 . The first one was from a maker I knew and have bought their PC stuff before and the cheaper one was from a unknown maker (both on Amazon) and he assured me the cheaper would be fine for the job....when needed

Not sure if this is the case but some monitors might have built in speakers or a speaker pass through which might benefit from HDMI. Years ago when I bought new Dell monitors they only had HDMI 1.4 which only supported 1080p so I was unable to take advantage of the full 1440p resolution over HDMI which displayport and DVI offered. This was fine for my older laptop which could only output 1080p over its HDMI port but the desktop needed to use DVI/DP.

Amazon Basics cable are fine and I've had better reliability using them than some branded DP cables. Cable spec and quality only becomes an issue when doing longer runs such as to a projector or if the PC is in a different room.
