My parents' website is a very basic HTML only website that I'd like to convert to wordpress and bring into the modern age. It's currently hosted by 1and1 on a business package that's way above what's actually needed and wordpress installation is way over my head with them, so I'd like to migrate to a different host that's cheaper and easier.

I've found how to do it with my new host, and I think I've found the details I need from 1&1 to do so.

I'm just curious really as to what's going to actually happen when the 'switch' actually happens. I presume It'd automatically start showing whatever content was on the new host, but what about email? I presume I'd have to set up the same email address with a new mailbox on the new host?

Yup. You have to set it all up to replace what you have with 1&1.

Where is the DNS record held and who "owns" the website address? That will be the key to figuring out how easy/difficult it is to switch.

No idea, I've just gone through the process both ends and just need to phone 1&1 to confirm the switch now. I've made new mailboxes with the new hosts so I think I'm right in stating once the switch is flicked mail will start going there automatically? Wordpress is installed, though I can't access the admin page to set it up until it all settles down

Should be - BUT someone needs to change the DNS for the domain to point to your new hosting or it won't make the change.

Will your new host not do the migration for you, no harm in asking, all they can say is no.
A club site and forum I run recently changed over to TSOHosts, they took care of everything for free

All done now, didn't take long at all! old website died as soon as I got off the phone with 1&1 and the new site went live with Knet the next day. Very happy with that. The only issue was I lost all my old email from the 1&1 server but that's my own fault, I thought it was on Pop3 not Imap!

Website is much nicer now, and no having to retype whole pages of static HTML every time someone makes a booking! I'm going to have to redo the photography on it now though!
