I want to set up my own photography website using a new domain name. I've checked and the name I want is free for .com and .co.uk

Does it matter which company I register the name with?
It is better to register and host with the same company?
Can the name be taken away from me after the initial 1-2 years is up?

Many thanks, Patrick

It matters who you register with!
Under no circumstances allow a company to register a domain on your behalf ... eg "We host your site including a domain name". Such services often end in tears if you want to move your hosting or the host (and admin of your domain) goes bust.
Register the name yourself with someone like 123-reg.co.uk (there are hundreds to chose from).

In theory the name could be taken away from you (not renewed) but that would be unheard of unless it contravened a trademark and went to arbitration.

If you have found the name you want register it quickly ... sometimes name searched for get registered 'on spec'!

Doesnt matter who you reg with so long as reputable company..

Doesnt need to be same host but can be... be wary of free hosting deals

You rent the domain name and you get first refusal to renew.. So long as not breaking any rules/laws then its yours so long as you keep renewing :)

i think I used fasthosts but only for registration NOT hosting.

Good advice their, to expand on stuff ....The people you buy the name through will contact you periodically to inform you of renewal times on each domain name 'you own' registered through them. ..and even if you where to miss the annual or more, renewal dates, you get a second and even a more expensive third chance to re-claim them... however they may have been suspended for use during that re-claim period

Domains bought separately to the hosting machine is normal practice.
All domains wherever they are registered through by you need pointing by DNS to a hosting space containing your website.

Thanks for that.

Do I need WHOIS privacy? Does it change my ownership of the registration?

Thanks for that.

It doesn't change ownership but it hides your details from anyone doing a search - not really necessary unless you have a good reason to want to hide your details ... for most people doing so would look a bit suspicious.

Cheers for that. Great flickr BTW

Oh and when you get an invoice after 1 or 2 Years from nominet for some rediculous fee, ignore it and renew through the provider you purchased from.

I've bought and hosted lots of domains through the same provider. Can't see what the problem is as long as you are the registrant which is the whole purpose in the first place.

Orchard hosting has been providing me and my twelve domains an impeccable service for the last 12 years.

I don't use whois privacy, my companies registered address is clearly marked on it. Which in my opinion you should do also for your business.
