I am finally getting around to setting up my own web site after years of putting it off. It is well on the way but one issue I have is over security. It seems that when I register my domain name, my address will be easily and publicly available on the web. This is rather like hanging a sign out side my house saying "Please come and screw the gaff for camera gear". Any (legal) ways around this? What do you chaps do?

Are your running commercially?, if not you can happily opt out of nominates requirement for an address. Even if you are TBH its a non issue

Just to clarify. Are you saying I can opt out of giving my address for a .co.uk domain?

What's the point of opting out? As I understand it if you operate a commercial website, you have to make you address visible on the website anyway. It's a legal requirement.

Yes, if you are a non-trading individual.

Another option is to pay for a PO box or mail box etc and use that address. I guess it depends on how much you value your privacy.

Why not ask your accountant if you can use their address as your registered office?

Do you have a business address that's registered separately?

Many companies are now offering .com registrations where they can hide your personal details (I'd guess by using a form of proxy) - usually a charged for service (vidahost charge £4.99, fasthosts charge £6.99). .co.uk domains can be registered privately anyway.

Yes the .com whois privacy has been available for as long as I can remember but there are conditions to be met to have your address details hidden on a .co.uk

Thanks all for your responses. I have been able to use an alternative address agreed by all parties.
