Had a truly awful day yesterday when my eldest dog passed away. :(

He was diagnosed with a large, thought to be cancerous lump, last saturday and was basically told nothing much could be done. He had been losing weight and was a little off his food, so thought we should get him checked over.Came away with some tablets and told see how we go, however we might need to make the 'tough' decision shortly.

I let him out yesterday morning, as per usual, he was wagging his tail as he went out and laid in his usual spot catching the early morning sun. I looked at him throught the window and he was looking back wagging his tail.

I went upstairs to get showered etc and 30 mins later when I came back down, he was gone, never moved from where he lay when he went out.

I am devestated, as are my wife, daughter and my last dog. He really was a character and part of the family.

So anyway, here is one of my favourite pics of him, probably posted before, but hey......

So I'm raising a glass to him, sleep well my old mate, you will be sadly missed.

really sad news to hear ,

if its any consolation it sounds like he didn't suffer for long and died peacefully

RIP Seamus

That's really sad, I am very sorry for your loss. Our first GSD developed a lump and had to be put to sleep, we had a home visit it was awful holding her. I wish she had just passed away in her sleep.

Aww my thoughts go out to you and your family. My kitty cat is the love of my life and he's 16 this year so I'm at panicking stage now :(

You should be proud of the life your doggy had - he looks in superb condition and I get from that that he was an extremely content and well looked after member of the family.

Kind regards

Sarah

I really feel for you  , take comfort in the fact that he didn't suffer and had a good life with you.

I lost my dog in January, hence the signature which I can't bring myself to change just yet

I feel your pain, as like others on here I've been there too.
But try to take comfort in the fact that he slipped away peacefully while enjoying the morning sun.
I'm sure he had a very happy life with you and your family.

RIP Seamus

:( Big hugs, im sure he had a wonderful life with you but i know its like losing your best friend , treasure the memories.

that is really sad to hear as a dog lover myself
take some comfort from the fact that he was in his favourite spot and passed on without you having to make the awful decision
rip seamus

Sorry to hear your sad news, however he passed away peacefully in a sunny spot and you didn't have to take him to the vets wondering if you were doing the right thing, he looked like a dog who enjoyed his life with you...

I'm so sorry to hear this. I lost my dog last September, and not a day goes by without me thinking of him, I miss him terribly. Please try and take some comfort knowing that there really can't be a better way for your friend to have passed away, lying in the sun.

Gremlin's signature is so very true, and always brings a lump to my throat when I read it again.

Nick, sincerest sympathies to you and your family. I nearly went through the same last month and losing a member of your family is never easy.

From the look of the photo it looks as if he was spoilt rotten (as any dog should be) and by the sounds of it he passed away quickly and with a smile on his face, you couldn't go in a better way.

Chin up and I'll also be raising a glass for Seamus...

To Seamus

That is sad but he wnet laying in his favourite place in the sun, many pets or people dont get that luxury. Im sure after your sorrow you will look fondly at the years you had together. to Seamus!

Sincere sympathies with those who loved him. Our great dane died last year, very sad, so know how it feels :(

It always leaves a big hole in the family group when a much loved pet passes away. My wife and I have owned dogs since 1972 and although we usually have 3 or 4 around the house it never is easy to say goodbye to a dear friend. I really feel for you all at this time, at least you can remember all the good times you had via the photos.

So sorry to hear, as others have said the old boy went in peace.

Please take a moment to read Rainbow Bridge, this was shared with me when Toby had to go - I often read it, I hope its true !

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

So sorry to hear that Nick.
Like many on here, I know what you're going through. It's been 18 months since we lost Luke and I still think about him every day.

I know it won't stop it hurting but try to take some consolation from the fact that he slipped away peacefully lying in his favourite spot and knowing that you were watching over him from the window.

My thoughts are with you and your family tonight

Really sorry to hear about Seamus passing on Nick

When I lost my JR I was devastated

So sorry to hear your devastating news.

It is something that lurks in the back of my mind and our JR is only 6 years old. We lost our last JR nearly 15 years ago (inherited due to marriage to her owner 20 years ago and much loved in the 5 years we had her....) and still she makes us laugh when we remember the daft things she did.

Hi Nick,

Sorry to hear you news but i am sure you will reflect upon Seamus' passing in time and be comforted that he was in a favourite place and just slipped away.

We lost our little chap Jaimie, who was 18, three and a half years ago when i was away on business. My partner had to take him to be put down which was very hard.

Best wishes to you and your family,

Tracey

My thoughts are with you. We lost our oldest miniature schnauzer to a stroke last september so I know how you're feeling. It's heartbreaking but just think of all the good times you've had.

:(

Really sorry to hear that Nick, the consolation I suppose is that he had a peaceful, natural passing and none of you had to go through the anguish of having him put to sleep...

Sorry to hear that mate, as a dog lover myself I know how you feel.
We get so attached to our dogs just like we do with humans, a lot of people don't understand why they have such major impact on us.
Think of the good times you shared with Seamus and all the fun your family had with him, hold onto those memories because they will always be with you.
All dogs have unique traits about them and you know that there were things about him that you will never find in another dog.

Thanks so much for all your thoughts. It as been a tough weekend but slowly we are starting to get over this. I appreciate each and every reply that has been posted.

Been there more times than anyone should have to bear. Tears you apart.

Graham is right - Really sorry to hear that Nick, the consolation I suppose is that he had a peaceful, natural passing and none of you had to go through the anguish of having him put to sleep...

Not many dogs die naturally so at least that was one burden removed. Bad enough losing a dog without having to bring about the end.
No easy way forward, Nick.

Really sorry to hear this Nick. I know how hard it is. They really are part of the family.

I lost my black Lab, Winston last year. Truly the best friend a man could have.

I was always fond of this saying..."The more people i meet. The more i like my Dog"

I am really sorry to read this and know how you feel I lost my best mate on 4th April last year a truly wonderful Rotty called Max I still miss him but know he dosnt suffer any more. My thoughts are with you mate :'(
