Yes
Because i can't find it.

i want to set up a couple of lights in a clamshell configuration for some beauty shots.

What i want is a short boom that i can attach to the main stem of a standard light stand, onto which i can fit a second light.

I have not been able to find anything like this, are they available?

At the moment, i am looking at settling for a short background stand and a standard light stand and putting them as close together as i can. But it's messy.

I have one of those just over a year ago, bought from a different store but it's identical to the one I have.

It's a shame as it's a total waste of money, the silver spigot at the end of the arm (seen below) comes loose very quickly and no amount of tightening will help.
After a while will not take any weight at all, so your flash/head/softbox/umbrella will not stay in a fixed position.

The column grip (the black doodad in the image below) is made from plastic and won't safely take the load of a counter weight combined with a flash head.

The only thing I can use this for now is extremely light weight stuff like flags or gobos.

Even a hotshoe flash with an umbrella won't stay in a fixed position. :(

For clam shell lights I opt for the old fashioned way = two stands.

Now I have a proper boom though, Avenger D600 with matching Avenger A0030CS base, I'll stick the top shell on that and have a regular stand for the bottom shell ;)

Shame, because otherwise that would be exactly what i want.

The problems you describe seem to be down to build quality, rather than it being a flawed concept. So someone must make a decent quality version that isn't made of cheese.

I shall continue looking, cheers guys.

Yep, the build quality is the issue.

The super clamp and magic arm may work but I fear that it will put a little too much weight on and unevenly.

The Avenger stuff is great, basically the D600 arm is like the above but a quality version, the only thing is that when you begin to enter the realms of good quality, the set will still cost around £300 or more. The base is just as important as the arm. I did try and mount the arm on a lesser quality stand but it simply wasn't safe.

I concluded that good booms cost.

Manfrotto do one at around 200 quid but this is only of use to extremely light weight loads like a hotshoe flash and brollie.

How is the spigot attached Tomas? if it is threaded then you could try your local DIY place for some Loctite 243 Threadlocker (or similar) you could also try a lock washer?

Failing that if you get all the measurements together (including for where it fits to the arm) i can attempt to make something on the Lathe, we have plenty of brass and stainless steel round bar :)

It's as smooth as a baby's posterior. It relies on two small nuts and screws with a latch to tighten the end of the pole around the very smooth silver spigot, similar to the set up that you use when fixing a garden hose to a tap. :cuckoo:

If you undo the black latch seen above, the silver spigot slips out like a turd.

There may be ways of making it work, but the quality of the pole is also arse, being totally hollow.

Not load worthy all round. A definite avoid to be fair.

What a stellar gent! Nice one Andy ;)
