Yes
As per the title, I think it does but just looking for confirmation really :)

Yes it does. You have to use the * button though (not sure what it is called.. AE lock button or something?)

If it has live view it will have AF. I dont think it's 'real' AF though.

 Not sure I understand that :) What's 'real' AF mean :D

It's like semi-automatic AF. Meaning you have to press a button to focus before you press the shutter.

ta, is there any difference between the focussing speed using live view and the normal eye piece?

Reason I'm asking is a mate's looking for one and he doesn't want to use the viewfinder but wants to try motocross. I'm not sure it would be up to it but I really don't know how capable it is.

You cant SEE it focus though. It just goes black as it focuses then you see it again..and then take the shot.

I see mine focus. It is slow and painful, but you can see it focus.

Yes it does. but manual is probably easier to use with it.

If its live view that floats your boat, get sony. best at it by all meaures!

Nikon live view certainly is an odd thing... and my D300 manual indeed says it uses contrast focusing rather than colour phase (with scene recognition) just like Joe T suggests. Nikon themselves say its not all that accurate...

I doubt it would work for motorsport...

just tell him to use the viewfinder?! As a newbie I took to it straight away - really, it isnt that hard

There's two modes of autofocus in liveview. Fast, uses the normal AF detection system, but the liveview screen shuts down to use this as the mirror needs to be in place. The other option uses contrast detection and is much slower. It's activated using the * button I believe, when focus is locked, the box in the middle of liveview goes green. I've only used liveview occasionally on the 450d, for alignment and focus on my telescope, and then is manual using the scope rack and pinion focuser anyway.
