Just comparing an image between Photoshop CS5 and just loading an image up in a windows browser and the CS5 version is a lot brighter. Does it apply a default setting to images on loading? this is just a tiff file, not a camera raw.

i think i found it :) In Edit->Colour Settings i set the RGB dropdown to "Monitor RGB" and it darkened right down. Might explain why i was getting dark print outs back from the printers!

You shouldn't be using a monitor as your default colour space. Use either Adobe RGB1998 or ProPhoto for wide gamut, or sRGB IEC61966-2.1 for standard gamut.

Also... if you're concerned about colour accuracy for print, you really should consider profiling your monitor.

Yeah ive got a Spyder 4 and calibrated my monitors, resetting them back to factory settings before calibration, but i still gave this brighter image though compared to print. So im not sure why the difference was there. The "monitor" setting just seemed to match up.

Having a profiled monitor means what you see is accurate. If that then doesn't print well, it's due to a printer profile problem. Making your images wrong in order to print is not the solution. If you sell your Spyder 4 and get a Color Munki Photo you can profile your screen and your printer.
