I've seen this off the coast of Redcar, Marske and Saltburn quite a few times and I just wonder what they're up to. Does anyone know?

With those crane arms I doubt it's fishing?

Just wondering.

I *think* it's to do with the controversial Teesworks dredging. There is an article here --> https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/new-phase-dredging-begins-teesworks-26107101

The main dredging vessel "Athena" is clearly *not* the one you are asking about, but in the article there is a photo which shows "Athena" alongside another vessel which looks very much like yours (although the perhaps the arms are blue rather than yellow.

Anyhow, that's my guess.

IMO your image shows an ocean going tug with a crane barge along side it.

The barge itself might be carrying a dive team doing some subsea infrastructure works of some sort?

That could well be it but I wonder why it's so far from the Tees and so close to the shore?

Whole picture rather than the heavy crop above to show how close in it was. Taken with a FF camera and a 40mm lens.

Ah, so it is two boats! That could well be true and would explain the odd shape but if so they must be firmly secured together as it always looks like this, there's never any daylight between them.

Next time I go I'll take my telescope and maybe a camera with a long lens and see if I can get a better view.

They've been off this coast on and off for quite some time.

Great stuff.

I do wonder what they're up to. It's seems to have been in and out of the area for some time.
