Ok,

Im being a bit of a wally here. In elements there is a simple dodge and burn tool. Does what is says on the tin!! You can dodge or burn highlights, midtone and shaddows.

How do i dodge and burn in lightrrom 2. I know i get the editing brush for localised adjustments and then......????

Whats the best techinique for replicating what i can do in elements?

Thnks
Greg

There is a new adjustment brush in lightroom which enables the selective brushing in of lots of different things like exposure, saturation etc etc. (oh..you just said that!!!)

Although I still take the image into photoshop for the final bits.

cheers Janice,

I ve mastered the controls so to speak, its just replicating the effect from elements.

I guess im looking for a guide/technique on how to effectively dodge and burn. Theres so many options to choose from i find myself keep resetting as ive overcooked things or used the wrong settings

there arent actually dodge and burn tools in lightroom though are there greg?

what are you using to try to get the same effect? low exposure on a brush adjustment and swiping the shadows etc?

thats what im trying to work out.

What does everyone else use to replicate the dodge and burn effect in elements or CS3.

I guess you would use a couple of adjustments/edits but **** ones?

Are you particulary averse to taking it into elements after you have finished in lightroom... for cloning, dodge & burn or whatever?

No, not particularly. I really like elements for the dodge and burn and a couple of other things. Just seeing if i could do it all in lightroom really.

Would make life a tad easier providing the results were equally as good as elements.

Thanks Chappers

To be honest I agree, I use PS to do jobs such as D&B. Don't ignore the grad tool that does work well

How would you use it for dodging and burning then. Whats the workflow you take. (any examples would be great)

Greg

It isn't called dodging and burning in Lightroom, even though that is exactly what it is.

You need to use the brush tool, then select exposure, drag the slider in the -ve direction for dodge (darker) and in the +ve direction for burn (lighter), that is assuming I've got dodge and burn right, I always get the two of them mixed up...

I guess then it adjusts all tones equally rather than being able to work on the high , mid and shadow tones separately like the actual dodge and burn tool . Sound like it's a bit like the exposure tool in CS3 if used in conjunction with a layer mask rather than a dodge and burn tool. :)
