I'm after a docking station for my XPS13. Requirements are charging via USB C, gigabit LAN, a few USB3 & 2 ports and HDMI or DP upto 2560 x 1440. It seems to be a minefield whether charging via USB C will work or not. I'm sure I could just buy a Dell TB16 or WD15 but surely there's something cheaper that will do the job? Anybody got any personal recommendations?

on things like docking stations defo go with the manufactures option.

Yes, I fear you're right. Fortunately, Dell's offerings are much cheaper on Amazon than direct from Dell.

The Dell D6000 Displaylink dock ticks all the boxes.

Supports up to three 4K displays or a single 5K display (1x HDMI, 2x Full DP)
Four USB 3.0 ports
One USB-C port
Speaker output
Combo audio
Gigabit Ethernet
Kensington Lock Slot
Charges up to 65W laptop via USB-C

I've got the older D3100 at work connected to a HP laptop and works flawlessly (doesn't support USB-C charging though). Used the same model on a Precision M3800 too and again worked well with 2x 27" 1440.

Thanks for the pointer. I missed that one as it's not on Dell's UK site. Reading up on it, it seems the only drawback is that it can't switch on the laptop so the lappie has to stay open.
I've got a D3100 too which is what made me want USB C charging but I think I might stay with it and put up with two chargers. The viable alternative seems to be the TB16 and I'm still thinking about that.

Okay for a single PC, single screen environment but I have a KVM in the way.....

Not sure if you misunderstood what this is or I misunderstood your requirements but that is like the TB15 built into base of monitor stand, so you just remove monitor stand from stanadard monitor and replace with this one then just the one cable to plug in and you get the full Ethernet, video, USB etc

I used it on XPS15s XPS13s Precision 5200s Lattitude E series etc

No, we understood each other; it's just that the DS1000 really needs a display-port monitor due to the embedded cables but I'm running several PCs through a DVI DL KVM switch. I'm also not sure my slightly elderly monitor has VESA mounting.

open, power on, close?
Possibly, depending on what close does. I'll have to test it.
