When I did an evening course at my local college a few years back there were a few people under 18. I think they were at the college during the day though.

I don't know if all camera clubs are the same, but when I went to my local one I was the youngest by quite a way, I'm in my late 20s!!!

You probably won't be able to go to a night school class until you're 16 and have finished your compulsory education. I do know there was a 17/18 year old lad doing a-levels when I did my City and Guilds a few years back, so if you wait a year or so then you should be fine.

Some clubs have younger members, you'd have to contact them and check them out. In my experience, younger folk are usually children of older members who are also members.

There is no reason why young people can't join a night class like a GCSE or what ever :) my course last year had 2 14 yearolds on it

You might also struggle to find a club to take you, the few round here have a no under 16's policy.

Many clubs are only too willing to take younger members, they could be the future of the club after all.

Usually new young members will be made a 'fuss' of in order to encourage them, the line between being made a fuss of and being patronised is a thin one however. Usually you only have to ask "How do I .... ?" and you'll have at least three 'experts' providing different advice, (a bit like here really )

Clubs are no problem, if you don't like it don't go again, although you may hate one club and love another.
Classes however are a different matter, as usually money has changed hands, so it could be expensive just to drop out.

`no under 16's policy` How sad is that.

Yep, I managed to talk them in to letting her in but I had to attend every single one as well and I barely know her, just through a friend. They then said they don't meet between May and October, so we decided not to bother.

I can understand where clubs are coming from,i have worked with children, you have to go thought all the CRB checks, and loads of paperwork.

I joined my local camera club (Chigwell Camera Club) And they're great for helping you out. Google 'Local camera club barnsley' or something similar to find a camera club near you and usually they let you come free for the first day or two to check it out.
My club do photography outings and shoots as well as having fellow members share their knowledge at meets, it's very helpful and only twice a month letting you practice the skills they give you in your own personal time before they move on.
I find it's better then an evening class as it's much friendlier etc.

Granted I'd rather not be the only 16 yr old amongst the elderly people, but unfortunately not many people my age are willing to go to a camera club at 7 in the evening, it's just not 'cool' .. But if your serious about learning it's a very good way to do so.
