Okay so I got a job offer doing shooting for a nightclub and Im pretty good with my camera (not great, but pretty good) and my question is.. Do I need a speedlite??? If I was to get into it I would evenually get one but do I HAVE to have one??

anyway any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

thanks!!

There's a guide to Club photography in the tutorial section. That should give you an idea of whether you need one or not, and some useful tips as well.

Yes absolutely you need a speedlight as most of the clubs are very dark. Even a fast lens with high ISO would struggle to get you decent shutter speeds. You need decent depth of field for shots with more than one person too....

thanks you!! I have a Canon Rebel XT and having a hard time finding out what speedlites are compatable with my camera

Yes there are others but I'd recommend the 580EXII

If that's a bit above budget, for the specific task of club photography, pretty much any old gun will do. At the lower cost end, Jessops or Nissin, and just stick a Stofen clone on it for now.

quoted for truth

why? you don't need the power, you don't need the master/slave, you don't even need the build quality.

OP: skip the jessops and chinese flashes, save up and buy a 430ex :) simple.

I use the 580EX which I can also recommend. The flash is built for canon by canon, build quality in comparison to some is way better (I have a Sigma flash too and it just isn't in the same league). When kicking round a club it is likely to get a little abuse (I just bumped and generally used) it works well and when you do need the power it's there.

THe 430 is a fine flash too. But if you're shooting for money you're as well getting the best.
