do you make the most of your gear?

If you have camera X and only use it in auto-everything mode, that's up to you if you think it's a waste. It's your money you spent on it. If you're happy with the photos that's fine.
Making the most of the facilities is something else. I doubt there are many people who use every facility their camera offers.
I upgraded from a Canon 60D to a Canon 6D last year and found one facility I missed was the flip-out screen, but I do use the wifi facility on my 6D. It might be a gimmick to some but it works well when I want to shoot at awkward angles using wifi liveview. I also use wifi to transfer images to my phone for instant uploading.

The auto modes are there for various situations and engineers will have put a fair amount of time in to making them work well, but obviously they don't always capture the image as you might want, but that's why there are facilities for Aperture and Shutter priority and manual, to give you the control when you want it.
Personally, for shooting, I mostly shoot in full manual, I like the control.
But my camera does have all the facilities for doing video, that I never use, so that's a waste from my perspective.

As for gear generally, I actually slimmed down my kit last year a bit (to help fund the 6D) and I sold my 70-300mm lens because I just wasn't using it. I now just have 3 lenses and have spent the last 6 months just using those and all of them get good use.

It is a bit of personal choice/opinion really. Keep using the kit you have until you reach the limits of what it can do or you find it lacking in some respect, then upgrade or add to your kit.
If you have a lens or body that's not been used for 2 years, ie two full sets of seasons, then it's time to move it on.
