i do,

i personally think the earlier they get used to ' technical ' equipment the less scared they are of using and possibly breaking it, and if tought right from the offset they will surpass my abilities with ease ,


just my thoughts

ps, i even let the wife use it sometimes to..............:getmecoat

No - but theres a really obvious reason for that:)

If I did however (have kids that is;)) I would introduce them to IT and Photography as soon as I believe they could start to grasp the simplest concepts of these areas.

Might not mean they get to use my 350D - but would definately let them have a go with my Sony P&S.
 
I'll pass my camera to friends, family and kids - as long as I know they have their hand in the handstrap and can't drop it easily :suspect1: .

They enjoy it and in ignorance try things I would never dream of - sometimes the unusual looks interesting.
 
I've let my eldest (6 yrs old) use my Kodak P&S on days out and car meets, etc. Some of the pics he's taken are really quite good. If you like blurry images of denim thread, people with half a head, etc. The important thing is he loves to take part, isn't scared to try things out and is enthusiastic about pictures in general, so the more I can do to encourage him, the better!
 
I don't have any children yet but should that time arrive I would not hesitate to introduce them to all forms of technology including photography equipment. I would start them off with a a simple point and shoot camera though and teach them the basics without having to worry about the equipment getting broken or damaged and it would also allow them to get a firm understanding of the basics without overloading them with features.
 
My son gets to use the 10D now and again.
Both my kids have their own cameras and most of the time they want to use their own.

Well my daughters only three & a half, & tends to throw things, so I'll keep the D70 from her at the mo ;)

That's very sensible mate, I can see your point of view there :smilenod: Maybe wait until she is a little older ;)
 
mine are 8 and 6, my little boy doesnt show an interest, he wants playstation games and a b'damon(no, i dont either)but my little girl is interested, and has used my casio calculatorcam™ on occasion
 
My two lads had the use of the family compact from very early ages, and the SLR's when I was around to keep an eye on them. They never showed much interest in the compact, but were quick to realise the potential of the SLR - kids aint daft.;)

They didn't get unsupervised use of the SLR till they were around the 10 yrs mark and appreciated the replacement value, and how many weeks pocket money it equated to. :shock:

Neither of them are particularly 'into' photography today beyond owning decent cameras, but both have a good grasp of the basics which will always stand them in good stead.

my son has used my Kodak 4900 p&s, but not allowed him to use my 350d as yet, and he's 25.

I've of course not got any kids yet, but i've got my brother and sister. I've let my brother use the 350 on the odd occasion, but i lost all faith in him where he basically let the camera slip through his hands. Luckily i was holding the camera strap, so there were no ugly results.
 
I've let my daughter have a little play with the 350 before now, and I wouldn't object to her using it in the future, under my supervision of course.

When we went out for a family day out in the summer, I had my 350 out all day, and she had a disposable point and shoot, for which we got the film developed, she loved it.
 
Gave my step-son my old FM2 and all my old manual-focus lenses and a new Billingham bag, enrolled him in a 2-day a week course to complement his drama studies at Guildford college and he gave up after two weeks.
Lead a horse to water and all that...
Now that my Mrs and I have split up, do I take it all with me or leave it all behind, secure in the knowledge that they'll just gather dust for ever...
 
lol umm no!! Why would I do that? My kids are 8 and 6 as well. My boy shows a tad bit more interest in photography than my little girl. So when he wants to "play" I give him my old chinnon or just my point and shoot.I don't think he is ready for a D70,lol. He actually isn't that bad for his age,lol. He is only 8 though, I don't get much interest beyond b'daman or beyblades either!! When I was a kid they were just spinning tops and marbles :confused: anyway it would be nice though one day if any of them do take an interest in photography.

It's only the biggest selling toys of the year steve, along with yu-gi-oh! I'm not a big fan of any of them to be honest. Beyblades is literally spinning tops with a rip cord that battle it out in a dome. that's it, not much too it. There are alot of different add on rings to make your blade stronger and so on. As for b'daman it's just marbles it would seem to me. My little man is just getting into it this year as it's newer than beyblades I think. I don't know as much about it, maybe Matty can help you out there,lol. It's all a scam. Good marketing I say. Like I said, when I was kid it was just spinning tops and marbles :p

hmm...
maybe if they could see the instant results from the D70 ( or any digicam ) it might spark em off,
my kids ( now 14 & 13 ) both have had their own digital camera's for years and i let em use my D70 if they ask, the main thing i get from if is the look on their faces to see that they have SUCESSFULLY taken a picture with a camera, and not had to wait weeks or be told not to waste film.....get him to take some shots of his b'daman or beyblades ...

just my thought and i thank you all for yours

btw, i had my first camera aged 7, a folding Kodak 1A ( if i remember right ) and am now upto about 110 different camera's

I had a Pentax Spotmatic at 12 and was developing my own films at 13, so it's possible...

Bought my six year old her own compact DC earlier this year. You have to make sure you review the pictures before they show them to anyone :embarasse
 
My 6 yr old daughter has her own camera. It's a 35mm film jobbie with two viewfinders so it's a little easier for her as she doesn't have to worry about closing one eye. We usually send the films off for D&P so she gets the added exitment of parcels addressed to her when they come back. She takes some really good pics with it too and it's been great in getting her interested in photography.

The downside is that she now want's a camera where she can see the pics on on the screen and print them off the PC like mum and dad's. Which is great and when I see something that's easy to use and low priced I'm sure I'll get one. Which then means another camera I have to keep charged, download and file the pics from. :laugh2:

I don't have kids yet but I'd definitely let them have a go with a P&S. I had my 1st camera when I was about 5 (remember those with the film cartridge and cube flash bulb that gave you 4 flashes before you needed a new one?). I loved taking pics and then 'helping' dad develop them in his home darkroom (aka the garage!). 28 years on I still love taking pics but now its Dad 'helping' me develop them in my home darkroom (aka the PC). :)
