Don't the D5000 and D90 share the same sensor? I'm not entirely sure you'd benefit that much from the upgrade to a D90....if I were you (and you're serious about your togging) i'd be more tempted to go for a 2nd hand D300 (for only a little more than the cost of a new D90). It's a mag alloy body and is weather sealed and built like a tank 
I did the same a few years ago, and went from a D40X to a D200. I just love the D200 and am only looking to upgrade now because of the limitations of it's top end ISO performance.......
....I suppose what i'm trying to say is....if your serious about your photography it might be worthwhile taking three steps forward rather than one, and upgrading as far as your budget allows.
