I've been using a friends work laptop for a while now which has photoshop CS3 on it :)

Now I've bought a 5D II, I can't load RAW files on it, an association I take photos for have said they will look into buying me CS4 but want me to explain why I need it.

So, can anyone explain to me why CS3 won't load my RAW files from my 5D II like it did from my old camera so I can explain it to them.

Regards
Michael

Once Adobe issue a new version of software they stop writing updates for the old version. OK you may disagree with that but that's the case. Now RAW far from bing a standard has many flavors and it seems that every new camera has a different flavor of RAW, Which means that Adobe have to reverse engineer that RAW file to find out how it ticks. They then release updates to read the new formats. Your 5Dll came out after CS3 was launched so the RAW decoder can't read the newer files. Now an out of the box version of CS4 wont read it either, but as Adobe realese updates for current software once loaded, run update and it'll load the latest RAW updates so that CS4 can read the files.

However there is a workaround. CS3 will read DNG files. So download the free DNG converter from the Adobe web site. Convert your files to DNG and open them in CS3. Bit round the houses but saves you the £170 or so for the upgrade.

Is there a specific raw plugin needed for your camera?

I think the 5D2 need ACR 5.3 thats only compatable with CS4 or elements 7, the only other way is the DNG converter (as mentioned above)

Thanks guys, I've told them and they are looking into it to see if they can buy me a copy so fingers crossed :)
