Do I need a RX100? If so, which one?

Yes
Hi,

So I've got the DSLR and a good range of lenses, so when I'm out 'doing' photography I'm all kitted up.

I've also got an iPhone 6s which is a great camera because it's always with me. But sometime when I'm out and about without DSLR and see a great opportunity for a photo the iPhone just doesn't seem to capture the moment right. I think it's the way it captures light that I'm not happy with (eg in early mornings and early evening when I'm out with the dog). So will a good quality compact help me capture these moments better than an iPhone? If so, I like the RX100 because it's just about pocketable, but which model?

Or should I just carry the DSLR around my neck the whole time?! Anyone with similar experiences?

Grab a MK1 RX100 for under £200! There is a RX100 thread to see what's this gem can deliver.

I guess that sub £200 price is for used? Anyway, I just picked up a RX100 mk1 new for £271 with £30 cashback so £241 delivered. It's for my parents but I did get it out just to check it worked so can't really comment on it but from what I've read it should be good for what they need.

Yes it was the used market. For peace of mind for your parents seems like new route was best option.

I have a used mk2 in the classifieds for £180.

Thanks for the reply, is the MK1 still up to scratch then or should I be looking for a newer model?

It depends on how much you want to spend. Each iteration had new features but from what read the sensor pretty much remained the same. MK1 seems to get a lot of praise for price to feature ratio. I am wanting the IV but waiting for it to drop in value.

Have a go of one in thevery shop first. After years of owning a DSLR and solid MFT cameras the point and shot RX100 M3 left me massively underwhelmed.

Thanks. I MK1 sounds like a good option then.

Dare I ask if anybody can offer an opinion on the RX100 vs today's top camera phones as a pocketable camera?

What was it you didn't like about it? I suppose it's only advantage over a DSLR is fitting in a pocket?

@UaeExile I know where you are coming from. I think this camera is more a phone replacement one as delivers a punch for the size. There are better options as with anything but for pocket-ability and walks it good. Nothing will beat our D750 :)

Just the ergonomics and the overall experience of a p&s. Sold it a few weeks after buying it.

The difference is we have our phones 99.9% of the time. Taking out a point and shoot seems completely pointless to me these days. Either I'm out "togging" or my mobile will do nicely..... There's no real middle ground for me personally.

Yeah I see your point and hoping my next phone can cover these situations. Mainly to capture my little one when the D750 is overkill. Current phone is just woeful. Nexus 6P seems good.

Much, much better than my iPhone, but that's what I'd expect!

I've put a couple of threads in general photo sharing of my recent travels (more to follow!).

I must say that the above comments sum it up pretty neatly for me too. The main thing that appealed to me originally was the pocketability, plus of course the decent specs and some very positive reviews, but I never developed much affection for it, and parted with it after some months without much regret.

When I had a mk1 I I've chose it over my dslr (had both in the car) for a proper session. Didn't regret it and ended up with a decent shot that I have sold and exhibited at A3+.

I really want a mk3 now for the better lens, sensor and evf. I see no point in the mk4 unless video is your thing. I actually also have an RX10 which whilst has the same sensor has a better lens than the rx100 and is a very 'complete' bit of kit.

Whilst I love my RX100 I wouldn't choose it over my DSLRs. I spent 7 weeks shooting with my RX100 whilst travelling and really hankered after my 6d, as good and capable as the RX100 is.

Whilst it produced good images (see threads in gen photo sharing) I just don't enjoy using it as much, and I've definitely become spoilt when it comes to the IQ of my 6d and lenses :)

I've only recently bought a Mk1 RX100 and so far am very impressed with it. I really enjoy taking shots with my iPhone 6Plus but the sheer quality and sharpness of the RX100 photos ensure that I always grab it when leaving the house. I take quite a few videos too so in the near future I can see me trading up to a Mk4 or possibly giving the new Canon G5x a trial as I love fully articulated screens. The iPhone is, obviously, with me the vast amount of the time but it simply can't deliver the portability AND the quality that the RX100 does.

Hope this helps

Andy :woot:

There is no doubt that the rx100 produces sharp images but there's something that leaves me a little cold with it. I'm not sure what and maybe it's because I've only just got one so havent had the time to process anything I've taken but I feel it lacking compared to Fuji.

In terms of absolute sharpness and camera size, the Sony wins hands down but it's a bit clinical - I just prefer what comes out of the Fuji

Thanks for all your input everyone. I went to the shop today and bought a MK1 to test out. I'll report back with my findings and vs iPhone in a few weeks. Looks a good camera so far. Thanks

Its much better than an iphone, no need to conduct testing in that area!

A LOT if the reviews I have read for the RX100 have concluded that there's not much point in buying one if you already own one of todays top of the range smartphones.

I found the raw files were often very flat to begin with and needed a lot of processing but could be greatly improved.

I have an iPhone 6. It doesn't compare to the rx100

I'm finding this in my initial test shots. Is it the same in Jpeg or do they look better without processing?

That's b*****ks!

What reviews are these??

I have photos of same scenes shot with my phone and RX100 while I was travelling (if it was a particularly lovely scene I shot a phone pic for FB updates) and on my PC there is a MASSIVE difference between the two. The phone having the usual grainy nastiness on anything other than the phone screen.

Mostly user reviews on youtube or on forums. I'm not saying all reviews, just many. I haven't listened to them as I've bought a RX100 now. The reviews didn't suggest a camera phone was as good, just that the RX100 isn't so much better to justify having it. I should of said that the reviews were mostly assuming you had a DSRL as well.

Anyhow, having been out for an hour with this camera and my iPhone 6s, the quality of the camera shines through as you suggested it would.

As above though, shooting raw you need to spend some time processing to get the best out of it, but the files are so good there's so much captured to pull from the raw.

Yer, the raw images I took this afternoon were very bland and typically sony (very serious and very matter of fact) however they have processed really nice. Will try shooting Jpeg tomorrow as this is really meant as a fun camera to capture lifes moments. The DSLR is for the serious stuff that I want to spend time in Lightroom with. Thanks for your input by the way, much appreciated.

Fantastic. Do you hanker over one of the later models? I suppose not with photos like those

No not at all. I shoot mostly with my Canon 6d so I don't really need, and can't justify the costs of the other models (and TBH I don't want to spend £5-800 on a compact!) which is why the mk1 is such a steal.

I'm the same - when I had a d7000, I bought a xf1 to carry around in the car and it was excellent. But when I went to m43, I sold the xf1 as I thought I didn't need a small camera anymore.

Then wifey announced she was going to New York and wanted a camera so I bought a mk2.

Hoping it will fill the gap the xf1 left

Can a smartphone produce exhibition quality prints?

No!

Can an Rx100 ..... yes.
