Currently have a D70 (its feeling old now) and considering upgrading to a D300. Its a serious jump but I thought it would be better to go straight to that instead of a D80. Thoughts ?

Do it do it do it :D heehee.

I have a D80, I absolutely love it. However, I was a bit naughty over the weekend and bought a D300... which I now love even more! I'm not seeing the benefit of the live view yet, I'm sure that will come though. I just love the feel of it, and it has all of the features of the D80 and D200 in one... perfect.

If you are planning any trips away soon, pick one up in duty free... mine was £808 body only.

yeah do it, i had a d100 and d70s before i jumped to the d300 and it's a fantastic piece of kit that will let you get better pictures imo.

One point I should add is that I am a complete photography n00b but love gadgets ;) though I am attempting to justify to myself that starting with a good piece of kit is the way to go. And you are helping with that decision :D

As your a noob i would add some sense to the argument.I would say use and learn with what you have before taking the plundge and buying another higher spec camera where the one you have will allow you to learn the basics to a decent level.

Dont just buy just to keep up with the times or because someone else has something better as this will be a never ending circle.Just my thoughts on the matter.

How old? if you are a n00b it cant be that old can it? the D300 is a great piece of kit, i upgraded my D40x because it was missing too many features i started to want to use and haven't looked back, its a great body. I am yearning for a D3 as i love shooting low light and hand held but i think i can manage with the D300 for a good while yet, as i don't have a spare £2700 lying around <gulp>

I have a D70 and yesterday took the plunge and brought a D300. Happy as larry!

More D300 owners eh? Great choice. You will notice the difference from D70/80 ownership and the lack of auto will ensure you learn how to use the camera to its full potential.
I went from D50 to D70s, D80 D200 and now D300. The jump to a D200 was well worth it. The camera felt nicer and encouraged me to use it more, the D300 is even better.
Jumping from a D70 to the D300, you will think you have a pair of brand new eyes as soon as you see the rear screen.

You made the jump to a D300 :( I can only dream...
Congratulations , although any posted results will have to be stunning now you realise :D

A bit more common sense to the situation. Do you really feel that your photography is being limited by the D70? If yes then do whatever you can to find the money to upgrade! Remember a better camera won't magically make you better, but if your convinced you need it then go for the d300 you won't be disappointed!

Sounds like a good reason to upgrade! Seriously i moved to the way of the D3, i found that my D200 or 300 just weren't up to heavy everyday use. Also i begun shooting alot more night time sport! I had to sell a few things and felt pretty sick as I actually handed over the money but after a fews weeks use i couldn't imagine working with anything else.

I have both a D80 and a D300. Got the D80 first. Both cameras are very good; the D300 is better (as well it should be considering the cost! But...better though the D300 might be, it still won't produce great photos "on demand." A D80 in skilled hands will run rings around a D300 in the hands of a novice.

So...I would urge you to stay with the D70, learn how to use it well, wear it out, then upgrade when you KNOW that your're going to stay in this hobby. If you're new to photography, as indicated, you might find that 3 or 6 months down the road the camera is just sitting around collecting dust. Just some thoughts...

Nothing wrong with the D70 though - 99% of the time it will produce every bit as good an image (especially if you're just uploading them to Flickr or something like that) as newer kit.

I still use my D70s for landscape stuff, it is a good camera.

Sound advice above, there's nothing wrong with a D70s or the D50 for that matter, after all people were very happy with this technology a couple of years ago and got some stunning results with them, BUT if you can afford to have the best and money is no object then why not, as has already been said it won't make you a better Tog but it will certainly help you along the way.
