Do fake filters exist?

I've been looking at the prices of the Hoya Pro1 77mm CPL filter.
They seem to vary a lot in price and I've found a couple of new ones quite cheap on ebay from UK sellers.
I am guessing that they buy directly from HK which allows them to sell them cheaper than UK retailers.
However, I just wondered if anyone had ever heard of fake filters?
 
I have no knowledge, nor proof of fake filters, but if the price is too low I would be very suspicious.
 
They fake everything else, so it's more than likely - they even found a factory in China producing counterfeit Audis - complete ones, a few years back :lol:

The average UK price for the Hoya Pro1 77mm CPL is around £100.
The two on ebay are £59 & £69 from UK sellers.
These seem to be similar prices to HK based e-tailers (although onestop digital are £72).

Buy from a reputable dealer, there are plenty of ebay sellers in the UK who sell genuine lenses but fake branded batteries and lens caps etc
 
Yep. Been stung before. They rattle in their frames. At least mine did. My mates glass actually fell out! :lol:
Serves us right really. Should have known better.
So thats fake Sandisks and filters I've be stupid enough to buy. :bonk: That was a while ago though. I have learnt my lesson..;)

I've had two instances this month of well-known dealers supplying older model lenses worth a total of several hundreds less than I paid for. The one I spoke to yesterday wasn't prepared to honour the price for the now out-of-stock item still showing on their website. Fresh stock is arriving today, but they don't know what the prices will be, and probably won't absorb the difference cos "the VAT-man makes more than we do".

FITP has reported dissatisfaction with a refurb camera from one of these dealers, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until the matter is sorted one way or the other. As with dodgy fleabay sellers and Jessops (in my experience), they seem prepared to try it on, so a fair number of customers must be too timid to complain.

Rant over, my point being that dealers operating with tight margins may be tempted to duck-&-dive and "well-known" doesn't necessarily mean "reputable".
 
Fake Hoya are pretty well known. I think there is an excellent chance something you buy from China will be - at least whenever I've bought a counterfeit, its always come from there...

I had one and the glass fell out!

Hoya seems to be the main one that is faked. I got my Marumi C-Pol from there (GadgetInfinity) and thats genuine.
 
I recently bought 3 Hoya PRO1 D protector filters from Hong Kong on eBay from hkdirect; they're definately the real thing, much cheaper than any UK supplier and only took a week to arrive!

i bought 2 from DCdirect, the realdeal as well. there is a difference between the HMC Pro1 and Pro1 D and the Super HMC Pro1.

The first one is standard thick glass no coatings...really rubbish, I have seen these get sold on reputable UK retailers for £100+

Then there is the Pro1 D these are thinish glass with coatings they are midrange...I have seen variable prices for these going from £80 to £150 on UK

the last one uber glass, really thin lots of coatings very expensive even the HK ones are equally expensive. (that's how i guage if the retailer on ebay is real deal, and of course the feedbacks) these retails around £150

all in all, you cannot trust the pricing of UK retailers, cos they can put whatever price they like. since that is the case then why is it so different from not trusting the ebay sellers for their product being genuine or not :naughty:

additionally if the thing is a rubbish piece of glass waste of time, you can tell when u rotate the thing, and also you can tell if it has any effect on darkening the sky etc. the Hoya ones i have are very smooth and very robust. and the CPL works, effects are very evident and there is no vignetting effects.

I would recommend DCdirect, as i have also bought from HKdirect which took well over 1 week to arrive, but HK direct had proper packaging where DC came in an envelope.

I need a 72mm and a 52 mm, and I've seen the ones on ebay.They say the stock is straight from hoya uk, I am going to take the risk with these, as the seller has over 24,000 transactions and has 100% possitive feed back. Even if they are fakes they must be very good ones !

I agree.
I've previously bought two Hoya filters via ebay and both are genuine.
Looking at the prices on ebay for the Hoya pro1 77mm CPL, I've now ordered one via Digitalrev who are slightly cheaper than Onestop Digital.
A friend of mine has bought from them previously and the price was more less the same as ebay sellers.
