I have an old cannon flash my dad gave me and wondered if it will work on my cannon 500d. The fittings are the same?

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think it will, have a look at the link Roger has posted re voltages.
I had one a few years ago and decided not to risk trying it and causing damage to my camera and sold it. I beleive it can be used with a remote trigger as a slave.
