DNG in Lightroom

Hi!
:help: Does anyone know the answer to this?
In Bridge/camera raw;if you convert a raw file to dng, it embeds the raw file along with the dng. If you convert raw to dng whilst importing into lightroom, does it do the same? :thankyou:

What happened when you tried?

Sorry for the delay. Being totally new to this digital stuff I have to admit to not knowing how to tell the difference  So its probaly not that important, I just did it because the camera raw book advised it. I'm now following Scott Kelby's book on Lightroom; and he makes no mention of it.

In the lightroom preferences ( you'll find them under EDIT) you can specify to embed the original RAW file in the dng conversion process , under the import tab.

The question is why would you want to do this. The DNG'd file would be about twice the size of the non embedded file.

I can understand you wanting to keep the original, why not simply back this up onto CD/DVD and store in a safe place.

By the way Adobe have just posted Lightroom 1.3.1 mainly Mac updates plus support for newer cameras.

Thanks for that I've found it! I have been using the free trial download of 1.3.1, as I have it on good authority that Father Christmas is bringing me a copy of the real thing. :woot: I’m really struggling with some parts of it, I use bridge/camera raw/CS2 at the moment and have only just got a basic grasp of that. I bought the Scott Kelby book and I’m trying to work my way through that. Things go OK until I transfer files to photoshop for sharpening and then bring them back to Lightroom. I then want to save them as large jpegs in the PP folder on my external HDD, I can’t find them in Lightroom. If I open Bridge and look at that file it sees them but Lightroom can’t. I need to feel confident in it before I let it handle all my photographs. :bang:

Thanks

Mike

Check out the sharpening options in lightroom. They are much better than Photoshop
You'll find them at the bottom part of the Develop module

I suspect that the reason you can't see the Photoshop image is that you are "Exporting" it, not use the "Edit in Photoshop" option. This option updates the Lightroom database. So that it "Knows" about the new image. Use Ctrl+E in DEVELOP to access this option. Tick the "Stack with Original" box You can adjust the image in Photoshop then "SAVE" it. The image is updated and you will see it in lightrooms library, along with the orriginal . Scot should mention this in his book, but maybe you haven't got that far yet.

There are some Tutorials out on the web for lightroom try this a a short primer

http://www.whibalhost.com/_Tutorials/Photoshop_LR/01/

There are lots of others as well. Try the NAPP web site

Also go to i-Tunes, select podcasts and download Adobe Lightroom Killer Tips. I wouldn't say they are all "Killer" but then the Americans do get a bit over excited. However they do contain some gems including one on the sharpening tools in Lightroom

I've enclosed some links that may help with the sharpening issue. The second one is a link to George Jardine's blog. It contains a podcast on the sharpening tools. You might also like to browse the other podcasts that George has produced. Either from the link, or better from i-tunes

:thankyou: For all the tips, i'm making some progress. Sorry for not replying sooner I've had Some long shifts at work.
Chappers; thanks for that info, the pod casts are great.
I'm not exporting to photoshop and losing images, its later when I export the large jpegs to the external HDD that they can't be found by light room. I've not had time to revisit this problem since I last posted so I'll try again now I have a few days off. :bang:
Keep the tips coming and again many thanks.

I think if you simply import them into Lightroom that should solve the problem. Lightroom needs to be told which images to recognise, bridge simply scans the directory and shows everything.

Thanks! I thought that was what I would have to do, it just seemed a bit odd have to re-import something that had been put there by Lightroom in the first place.

If you "Edit in Photoshop" (Ctrl+E) it'll take your image and use lightroom corrections, and convert it to whatever format. PSD TIFF, JPEG you like. It'll open the file in Photshop, you can then do the adjustments you want then "SAVE". It'll save the file in the same folder as the original RAW image, but with all the Photoshop adjustments, and you'll be able to see it in lightroom. If however you need it in a different folder then you've got to do the export and re import route

It may be a good idea to save your Photshop images to a different folder. Why not drop that suggestion off at the Adobe Web site. It would simply be an option in the "Export to Photoshop" dialogue.

I bought Lightroom primarily for 3 reasons: I like new things to play with, everyone on TP raves about it and my son can get it for £80 as a student. :D

Before Lightroom I used the following system. Transfer raw files from card to ‘Download’ folder. Delete all rubbish, if any left; batch rename and convert to DNG. Save one copy to external HDD and another to ‘Edit’ folder. In camera raw; straighten & crop, check for clipping, make any minor adjustments to colour temp. and exposure etc. Convert to Tiff and move to ‘Finished’ ‘folder. Open in Photoshop and run automated action that sharpens, converts to high quality jpeg and saves to ‘Archive’ folder. Save a copy to the same folder as DNGs on external HDD, then convert to thumbnail jpegs and save to folder on internal HDD that carries the same name as folder on external. This way I can do a search of the thumbnails that will lead me to the correct folder or backup disc in future.

Now I know I’m just a bit thick when it comes this digital photography software, and I am probably missing something here; but I’m struggling to see what Lightroom does over and beyond these present needs.

I was hoping that as my knowledge and requiremnts grow, by using Lightroom from the start I'll save myself hassle down the line.

I don't know if this helps , but this is my workflow

Import images from card and save as dng to HD

Copy images to CD

Edit images i.e sort images, delete rubbish and rename.

Copy sorted images to external HD

I can then work at my leisure on the saved images. I don't need to export unless I want to as any edits I make are stored in Lightrooms database. In fact it may be several months before I need to export images

One of lightrooms biggest aspects is the keywording feature. Now you may not need it, but it is helpful when yoy are trying to find a selection of images that were shot over a period of time. Example "seascapes" I can call up all images with the seascape keyword for selection. Saves trying to remember where everything is.

Try using the sharpening options in Lightroom they do work very well.

TIP Zoom to 100% and then as you move the sliders hold down the Control key. The image will go to monochrome and you can see the effect each slider is producing. Note this effect only works at 100%

Keep at it and work your way through the book. Lightroom can seem complicated at times but after a while all becomes clear. I've been using it since the Windows Beta came out nearly 18 months ago and wouldn't go back. But then it may not be everyones cup of tea.

And you're making me envious, Lightroom for only £80. Brilliant.

Enjoy

:bang: I know I've seen the answer to this one on here; but I've searched and can't find it. I'm trying to run an batch automated action that sharpens in Photoshop and then saves as large jpegs. But each time I try to run it; the process stops at each file and asks me what size of jpeg I want, does anyone know how to turn this off? I have tried running the action on its own before exporting from Lightroom and I have tried running the action as a droplet during the export process and it has the same problem each time.

thanks

If you are importing RAW files into LR then I think you should try using the tools within LR rather than using PS. All you are getting is more files, soaking up disk space when you can have a RAW file alone with adjustments applied in LR. (Hope that makes sense)

You can "synchronise" settings such as sharpening, cloning, etc to multiple RAW files in LR which tidies up a lot easily before you need to involve PS in your workflow.

I am a convert but only after more than a couple of lost weekends;)

Thanks Gary; I see what you are saying, Chappers said the same thing 'stay in Lightroom' but I really like the results given by Lab colour sharpening in Photoshop. With CS2 I had a workflow that left me with a copy of the original Raw (DNG) and a large processed and sharpend jpeg in the same folder on an external HDD. I'm now trying to create a similar workflow through lightroom, it may be that Lightroom, if used properly  makes some of this workflow obsolete.

I have solved this problem of the jpeg size once, but like an idiot I deleted the action in photoshop thinking I could just re-create it for Lightroom. I had forgotten about this snag and now I can't remember the cure.

From what I understand Lightroom does it's sharpening in effectively LAB colour space, sharpening only the luminance channel leaving the colour one's alone

Hope this helps

I did some research on your last post; and it seems I’ve made a mistake by being a slave to Kelbys book. :bonk:
He is very dismissive of the sharpening in Lightroom, but he’s using 1.1 in which the sharpening was rubbish; 1.3 is vastly improved. Now I feel happier doing all my basic processing in Lightroom.

I would still like to find out about the jpeg sizing problem it’s just a tick box somewhere but I can’t remember where. :bang:

Thanks

There is an update to Scotts book. You'll need to go to the publishers web site and it's got the update on it. There's a bit of a security protocol, what word is on what page etc, but the version update is there.

As far as the resizing problem, try in the automate dialogue ticking "Override Save As" option

Found that download thanks, I was on that site for ages earlier today and completely missed that :D I did download some other tutorials though, now I just need some time to read/watch them; but I'm getting closer.

I tried that tick box but it did'nt have the effect I was after. I think I made a mistake tucking the question away at the end of this post. I should have started a new one just for this problem.

thanks
