I have CS2 and am fed up trying to edit NEF files from my D300. I had a Ddddd70 and CS2 opened the RAW files fine. However, the D300 can't be opened. I downloaded dng converter and converted NEF to DNG. Dig Photo mag says that once you have done that CS2 will open them. It doesnt and I keep getting the message 'Unable to use the Camera Raw plug-in. It is not compatible with this version of Photoshop'

I have also downloaded the latest Camera Raw plug-in 4-4-1 and it doesnt work either. Obviously some compatibility issue. What could be wrong? If I cant sort this will have to use JPEG only. Fed up!:bonk::bang:

I try to minimize my use of Adobe software so can't help there, but you should be able to open the DNGs in IrfanView or Raw Therapee and save as TIFF for further editing. As the name implies, Raw Therapee is a RAW converter. So is IrfanView, but not nearly as powerful. Both are freeware/donationware.

If you have CS2 then Camera Raw 4.4.1 isn't compatable. It's CS3 only. Check the adobe download page for camera Raw for CS2 I think it's version 3.x

You'll need version 4.5 of the converter for D300 files.

Check the readme file for camera compatability

Tried to find aadobe download 3.x but didnt succeed. It wouldnt by any chance be 3.7. Its available and talks about CS2?

Sorry the terminology ".x " means any value. So it could be 3.3 or 3.7 I wasn't sure what version CS2 needed so I simply left it as a variable.

You are probably right that 3.7 was the last version for CS2. However it wont be able to open your D300 files. You'll need to run the DNG converter on them.

That's one additional advantage of dng is that the files can be opened by older programs provided they can read the dng format. No need to upgrade Photshop everytime you get a new camera.

By the way don't be surprisedif the files in dng format are smaller than the native nef files. The dng converted does a better job of lossles compression than the camera does, well it's got more computing power and time to do it in!!

chappers you're a genius. Downloaded 3.7 and all working now. Using the DNG converter. As you say still cant open RAW files directly in CS2 - need dng

Thanks:clap::)
