DJI Pocket - still worth considering?

I thought I'd ask if anyone feels the DJI Pocket is still worth purchasing? Being older kept i'm wondering if there are reasons not to such as compatibility/softare etc.

I'd like to try capturing short video clips to create mini films but don't really want the bulk of a mobile phone gimbal. I'd also like to record on something else as battery life on my phone isn't the best. The DJI pocket seems like its a cheaper introduction into it but I don't want to waste money if its no longer easy to use due to requiring software that's no longer compatible.

It would be fine. Just use iMovie or whatever software you use for editing.

Thanks. Im now wondering if its worth the step up from the pocket to the pocket 2. Looking on MPB its £159 for the DJI Pocket and £254 for the DJI Pocket 2. I'm currently ruling out the Pocket 2 creator combo as I don't think I'd really need the accessories.

I've been considering this too, the main thing in the creator combo is the bit plugs on the bottom which enables full link to smartphone over wifi and ability to use an external mic.
Both very useful but if you want that part afterwards it's about £100 (for not very much typical rip off).

Other stuff in the kit I already have similar or don't need so it is annoying.
Anyway I have an unopened new on from ebay arriving today most likely - without overpriced kit.
Not bothered about smartphone link but the xternal mic would be good.

I’ve been looking at the cost of the accessories on the pocket 2. It kind of makes sense going for the creator combo if I want one of the accessories. I’m not sure if I’d add any accessories in the future.

I wonder what the imminent osmo action 3 will bring, the action 2 seems a bit overlooked but has many really good features.
Not needing anything like that I'd never really checked it out until comparing with pocket 2.
The problem will be £500 region initially so not going there. My original Osmo Action is so good I think they are still a great buy at around £200

After checking through eBay for a few weeks and bidding on a few I’ve been lucky to pick up an excellent condition DJI pocket 2 creator combo for the price of the DJI pocket from MPB.

Does anyone know a good ND filter for the pocket 2? I think I’d rather go with a variable ND filter just for ease but I can’t seem to find one. The official DJI ND filter set seems to be hard to get hold of and probably more than I was thinking of at £45.

edit: I’ve found a variable ND filter but I’ve never heard of this brand.

You will have noticed that its 'awaiting stock' but TBH as it's Clifton Cameras I would doubt it's anything but good quality. :)

That’s good to know. I’m guessing they don’t sell many so it’s an item they order in rather than carry stock.?
They have just featured drones in their usual sales email so I suspect they have a few on order but they are easy to deal with and very knowledgeable so an email or call would give you an accurate idea. :)

I have the original one (the current one has a bigger sensor and is better with low light). It's very good for travel - you can just wave it about above your head or out of a car window and it's always level. With the optional Bluetooth module, you can see the live view from it on the DJI app on your phone. This was what I actually bought it for tbh - as you can double tap your face on the app and, with the camera on a stand, it will track you. Until that is, you go behind something and come back, at which point it says "who's this random dude?" even though you appeared from the exact spot where you disappeared.

I've also used it on the end of a collapsible boom, tethered to my phone. mounted at the near end as a monitor. This allows you to get some really cool movements - through gaps even a drone won't fit.

Not so good in low light though, and when I've used it as a BTS cam in the studio the footage just does not look good enough to splice into the other BTS cameras' footage as they have 35mm sensors (I use old Nikon D800's). The new one has a significantly larger sensor though and would be worth checking out on Youtube

Thanks, I will take a look. Its turned up this afternoon (Pocket 2) so I've been having a quick play with it. So far it seems pretty good and good for the money I paid. Its nice and small. Hopefully it will replace my phone for photos and videos. The gimbal action is interesting to watch. My wife is worrying we will become youtibers. I doubt that very much!

I’ve had a good play this evening with the pocket 2. I’m glad I managed to get the pocket 2 creator combo version as I wasn’t really aware of the benefits of the accessories. The do it all handle and tripod are great accessories. I didn’t know the do it all handle had Bluetooth remote control via a phone. That’s a fantastic feature with the set focus follow draw square feature.

I’m looking forward to trying this out to capture some short videos.

Yeah, the Bluetooth connectivity is really useful. You can use the follow-focus (face/object) without it, but selecting subjects on the tiny screen on the camera is a pain. I'd love to know how you get on with that - as it's a bit flaky on the MK-1 Pocket.

I have one and it is still very useful but I really do wish it had come with wifi and mic capabilities built in. The wifi module is hard to get now and doesn't allow for an external mic to be used at the same time BUT I found a long usb cable helps sometimes to get the phone away from the device and operate it that way.

The face tracking is harder to control on the little screen but does work really well.

By Bluetooth module, do you mean the wifi module or is there another dongle I need to look at?

Yes that's it - it uses Bluetooth and WiFi. On the original Osmo Pocket it was just called the "Wireless Module". For the OSMO 2 it's called the "Do It All Handle" and is included in the Creator Bundle.

As far as I can see you can't use a mic with the original while using the module, is that your experience?

I can't find my wireless module (haven't used the Osmo for a long time tbh) but I did find the manual, and the pass-through USB-C port is described as "Power port" so I suspect you are right, and you can't plug in an external mic.

I wonder if the rumours for a new model on November are true. If they include WiFi / external mic port as standard I may upgrade but in fairness my MK1 has been fairly redundant since the pandemic started and still works perfectly well. Just a new model could be more practical and therefore a worthy treat. Hmmm
