DIY Timelapse Dolly - Anyone done one?

I am thinking about doing myself a DIY motorised time lapse dolly as it works out far cheaper than buying ones already done by companies.

Anyone done this themselves? How did you build the controller?

I'm thinking of using Arduino maybe along with mx2 shield and slider from makerslider. Only issue I got is the programming part, how easy is it? Should I go down a different route, if you have let me know.
