I've been meaning to try this for some time and got around to make it today.
I take no credit for the black straws idea because anyone who reads strobist already knows about that.
Made with:
A 2.0L Black flowerpot
About 50 black cocktail straws
Some plastic right angle packing material (similar stuff can be bought at DIY stores)
Black gaffer tape
Bostik glue
Cut a rectangular hole at the back of the flower pot to fit your flashgun.
Cut the right angle plastic to length and insert into hole and gaffer tape into place to make a smooth but snug insert for your flashgun.
Cut a strip of the black plastic and form a circle to fit into the wide end of the flower pot (or alternatively use cardboard and re-enforce with gaffer tape).
Once you have a ring, cut the black straws to your desired length and glue inside the ring (i found 15mm lengths to produce a nice spread of light).
The beauty of it is you can make several inserts of different length straws to fit inside the flower pot giving you more choice when on location.
