I'm interested in getting an A3 printer and the Epson R2880 always seems to appear towards the top of all the reviews and recommendations that i've read. Although the R2880 is above what i would ideally like to spend, I'm still very tempted so thought i would see if Epson have an outlet store similar to the one that Canon have on ebay, I couldn't find any discounted UK models, but did find these US ones.

I appreciate that there wouldn't be any warranty with the printer if it came from America, but would there be any issues with voltages once i had the correct plug, and does any one know how much shipping would likely be if Epson US would ship to the UK?

Thanks

Kev

Don't know many answers to your questions. However I have an Epson 2880 and have had it for a while now and am now very happy with this model. However when I first got one it didn't read the chip on the yellow cartridge, so I took it back to Epson and it was replaced by another with exactly the same fault. These first two printers were unusable. What happens if your cheap R2880 from the US either comes with or develops a similar fault?

not going to save anything once you pay postage, import tax and VAT - not worth the risk if you have a problem.

Had a look at the B&H web site. They have some 2880, which are prices at around £350 plus tax. Now shipping would cost ( If they were allowed to ship to the UK . The web site states they cannot import into the UK ) another £150. Yes its a heavy beast, making it around £500, about £50 more expensive than one in the UK.

You could also be charged VAT on top of the US sales tax plus import duty. (Not sure what that is at the moment ) so it ends up being more expensive than to buy in the UK.

I have had the Epson R2880, bought from Calumet, who were prepared to compete with other lower prices I had found locally. I wanted a local outlet so that I had someone I could speak to and if necessary, return goods to. They could not have been more helpful with demonstration of the Epson and Canon before I bought. They also have a 3 year warranty for about £38, which is a bargain and well worth the money if I wanted to upgrade and sell on with the guarantee, which helps to hold the price.

It's a superb printer and I am delighted with the results. My advice would be to stay in the UK and if in doubt, don't forget that the Focus on Imaging show is at the NEC in March and most stands will offer a discount if bought at the show.

Thanks for the replies everyone, i thought that it may work out cheaper to get one from the US, but wasn't sure. you have all confirmed for me that i was just far too hopeful.

I'm thinking of going to focus on imaging, so may treat myself. Thanks for your input.

I went to B&H Photo in NY last year and its a sort of photographers aladdin' cave. I was blown away by the relative cost of printers there compared with the UK. One could get extra discounts on the day also, by being there in person. However, upon enquiry, my understanding was that US printers are chipped to go with inks over there - and likewise for European printers and the inks available over here.
'Chipping' is something I don't understand well - and dont have the technical ability to get around. It seems like a strange thing to do in a so called global economy. Anyway, I came back to UK without a new printer. However, I would recommend a visit to this store to anyone who has time to spare in NYC.... :-)

Uk mains 240v
Us Mains 110v

I dont think the printers are dual voltage and although it's probably a simple link inside to change if you just got it and pluged it in it would go bang.
