Yes
I keep on getting adverts on my Facebook page about online photography courses, one of them being Shaws , which advertise a diploma and your 1st month free. Are they a scam ?

Who validates the diploma?Do they carry Ucas points?
You can do distance learning through people like the OU or Open College of the Arts, but these will be more Art using photography as a medium type courses.

Excatly I can't really find much info about them although they are keen on saying how good they are and want to take your money from you !

I'll print you a diploma for £500. What subject do you want to be qualified in?

There once was a time when education was seen to be a public service, at least in this country. I think that it was around the time of the Thatcher government that there was something of a shift to a more American model where it was seen more as a business.

Please know that if you sign up for this course, the touted 'diploma' will be worth absolute zero.

Thought I would google them a I could find some reviews.

Now, granted I haven't dug too deep but what struck was that in the main they were either glowing or of the poorest. That was a warning bell to me because that said polarised is unusual.

Therefore IMO buyer beware!

I would have a look at this one

http://www3.open.ac.uk/forms/digital-photography/

No idea what it leads to but at least it was developed in conjunction with the RPS
You earn no credits from the OU so you won't be able to put it towards anything. It states that it "give you the necessary basic skills to tackle The Royal Photographic Society Licentiate Distinction (LRPS) in still photography" - so it is relatively speaking quite basic.

I started with the OCA, good course, one poor tutor the others were brilliant. But time available and galloping costs (it went from £595 per course to over £1600) meant I've stopped, but it does give me valid ucas points towards when I pick it up again.

The scary thing is this popped up on my Facebook and it's getting slot of interest so they must be doing well !!

I done the free foundation course on shaw. For the diploma they charge I think it was 30 or 40 quid. As I'll never need a diploma as I just wanted to learn how to use a dslr and get extra tips I opted not to give them the money for it. It's not compulsory on the free course but I suppose they gotta make money somehow. Anyhow after the foundation course which was free on a free trial I learnt so much. Thought it was going to be rubbish but I'd recommend the foundation course to any beginner. My photography has got a lot Better since. I'm even thinking about doing the advanced course. Btw I'm not affiliated with shaw lol

The only course was a 6 lesson evening class I did at the tech college on how to use the dark room, how to use chemicals and enlarger. No one ever taught me how to take a photo and I learn on film.

@Anthony78
1. Learn to ignore Facebook ads. they're aimed at you, of course they provoke interest (they've probably increased since you mentioned it here)
2. Do you really want a photography qualification?
3. What do you want to learn?

When you've answered 2 & 3 we can advise on the best way forward

If you really want some photography qualification the either go to local college or a degree. I doubt either will get you jobs more than a good portfolio though.

I did the Shaw free one a while ago. It was ok. Great if your just getting into manual. Didn't pay for the certification as didn't see the point.

Paid £19 for the diploma off groupon a couple of years ago, didn't end up getting past the first couple of lessons because of work commitments but seems to be alright. They email me all the time offering me free beginner courses.
