Yes
the 70-200 f4L is a real bargain at the moment, should I badger the wife for the money?

I know the 70-200f4L is theoretically a much better lens than the old 75-300, but the 75-300 4-5.6 USM II is not a terrible lens upto 200 (at 300 it is total pants, but that can be avoided).

I'll just be using it for family outings, kiddy sports days and holiday snaps. Realistically I know I've got no artistic photographic ability but I do like to dabble.

So would I notice the difference?, and more importantly would the boss notice the difference?

or should I just concentrate on using the old lump properly?
I can always think of lots of other ways to spend her money

I've had both of these lenses in the past....both gone now...but there is a monumental difference in the quality, resolving power and contrast.
I would go as far as to say that they are so far apart in IQ that it's difficult to make a real comparison. Various sites show the MTF charts for these versions
75-300 http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog...-zoom-lens&cName=canon-lenses-canon-zoom-lens
and 70-200/4L http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog...f-usm-lens&cName=canon-lenses-canon-zoom-lens
These say it far better than I could.

to echo what CB says. The 70-200 is streets and I mean STREETS ahead of the 75-300.
Yeah you lose 100mm, but the colour rendition and sharpness you gain....

Another vote for the 70-200L - it's just in a whole other league.

I'm always cautious of "knocking" a lens as a dozen people will pop up and defend it. Mine sat at the back of the cupboard for a long time and was then sold on Ebay as I would have felt guilty selling it here!
This is the POTN link for the 75-300

Marcel appears to have got the 70-200/4L (the less perceptive of you might not have noticed this but I'm pretty good at reading between the lines) and he seems moderately happy.

Go for the 70-200. If you need the extra reach, which I don't think you will, opt for a 1.4 x converter at a latter stage

thanks everybody, you convinced her to go for it, email to kerso sent

. . . you lot better be right or I'm in deep doodoo :bat:
