Hi everyone, I am a complete newbie to the site.

I am looking to buy a digital slr: I am an old timer using a Canon EOS 300.

Please forgive me, this is probably a completely stupid question but if I were to buy a digital SLR could I make use of the range of lenses I already have??

Please be gentle with me: I am a complete digital SLR novice

Ann

In a word, yup.

All your eos lenses will work on film or digital versions of eos cameras.

That said, there are some older sigma lenses that don't like the digi cameras and cause error codes and don't work but no other harm.

The EOS lenses will fit the body, but as I understand it, you won't have auto focus or Image Stabalisation and the like. So sadly, i think you will need to get yourself a new lens or two.

And don't be worried about being an 'old timer' and EOS 300 seems quite new to me. I was using a AE1 until I bought my first dSLR. As everyone knows, 50 is the new 37. Old is good.

Ooops, looks like I am wrong. Maybe if the lens is an EF fitting you will be OK. Don't ask me that question again.... 'cos I don't know the answer. Hahahahaha

If they are canon EF lenses, then they will/should work perfectly ok with the digital body.

Canon have two current lens lines. The first are their "EF" series lenses. These will fit on any EOS camera body ever made, including all 35mm fil, APS film, APS-C digital and 1.3x and 1x (full frame) DSLRs.

Any EF lens will work with any EOS body.

The second line of lenses are the "EF-S" series. These lenses have reduced frame coverage suitable only for use with recent APS-C DSLRs.

Many thanks for the replies so far.

The lenses I have:

canon ef 80-200 mm
cosina 19-35 mm
sigma 105 mm

I don't have a huge budget to buy a DSLR body. In your opinion is there a body I could buy in order to make most use of my current lenses?

The Canon lens will work perfectly on any Canon DSLR.

The Cosina and Sigma will physically fit, but may or may not work properly. (Canon don't make the specifications of their lens/camera interface available to third party manufacturers, so it's possible that modern DSLRs talk to lenses in ways which Sigma et al couldn't have known about years so.) But it can't do any harm to try them.

one last thing to consider as well...

If you get one of the XXXD or XXD models then the sensor is cropped giving you the equivalent lens focal length of x 1.6. It's basically like zooming into a 35mm negative on an enlarger and cropping the outside edges off (don't worry you still get what you see through the viewfinder!)

This means that if you buy say a 40D or a 400D then your lenses will now be the equivalent focal length of, if my maths are correct...

canon ef 80-200 mm 28-320mm
cosina 19-35 mm 30-56mm
sigma 105 mm 168mm

If you are on the edge of deciding to buying a DSLR then I would advise you to jump in both feet, you wont look back :)

Good advice here, but what it boils down to - IMHO - is buy a Canon 1000D, 400D or 450D with the kit lens -18-55mm IS. This will go well with your 80-200mm. Is your Sigma a macro? If so, I'd keep that as any loss of automated functions won't matter too much with macro - it's generally not an action-packed style of photography!

Your Cosina lens looks like it's heading for redundancy. It's not great optically and will be replaced by the better 18-55mm. Because of the crop factor of the new camera (inevitable unless you go for full frame - think mega-bucks) you will now be missing the wide angle, and should look towards something in the 10-20mm range.

If none of this makes sense, apologies ;) Read up on crop factors and how it affects the angle of view of your old lenses.

Thanks a million for the replies. The Sigma is a macro so I'm pleased that I can keep that one.

And thanks for the advice re: Cosina Lens tbh it was never brilliant.

So today I'm going to look through the forum and hopefully decide which DSLR to buy. I'm so grateful for the replies.

I am now the very proud owner of the 450D.

I am so excited so I need to quickly feed and water the family then I can set it all up and have a go.

Once again, thanks to all who replied. I'm looking forward to uploading some shots very soon.

Congratulations, That's a good buy.

I've had a little play with one of those and I thought it was great. Mind you, I think all cameras are pretty good these days.

Hope you have real fun with it and lok forward to seeing some pics. :)

One of these is definitely wrong.

canon ef 80-200 mm 28-320mm
cosina 19-35 mm 30-56mm

I reckon the 80 would be equiv to /128/
