Digital Photoshop Backgrounds instead of Buying Backdrops?

I've been looking for some muslin backdrops on eBay and found people selling CDs with Digital photoshop backgrounds on them.

How effective are these to use? and are they a viable replacement for multiple coloured backdrops?

I am assuming you need at least 1 muslin backdrop or plain wall that you can use, then layer the image, delete it out with photoshop, adding the digital background via layering?

Anyone use this method?
 
It's a doddle to make your own digital studio background in photoshop, this took about a minute. The problem with any of these though is the need to select your subject from the original scene, this is the time consuming part.

I can imagine.

Would it not be easiest to have a lime green or other garish colour muslin for the sole purpose to make it easier to pick it out to add the digitial base?

Yes, some people use the chromakey green backgrounds but they need to be well lit to work properly.
 
Shouldn't matter too much as long as it's evenly lit, it just makes it easier when the time comes to select your subject, you also need to light your subect reasonably well to avoid green reflections on clothing or hair.

Is it just as easy to cut out from other coloured muslins? Black, white, off-white, pink? Providing the scene is evenly lit and its a colour that makes the focus stand out?
 
I'm not sure black would work but most other colours should work, it's about being able to select the background easily really, that and having a good contrast with normal skin tones and common clothing.

Thanks, I think I may get one white / off-white backdrop for my pics and then when I want a bit of variety, Use the photoshop backgrounds.
